This cosy apartment in the village of Torno is ideal for families and couples looking for an authentically Italian stay by the water. We think the terrace here could do with a bit of a refresh, but there's space to enjoy an alfresco drink or snack in the shade. You'll need to climb stairs to reach the home's entrance, but you'll have some lovely views of the rooftops and Lake Como itself from the dining area. The lake is just a stroll from your doorstep, and the city of Como is easily reachable by bus for days out.

Live like an Italian noble, right on the water of Lake Como, at this grand old dame of a villa. Take a water taxi across the lake to all the charming waterfront villages and return to your private dock below the terrace. If you’d rather explore on foot, your local town of Torno has pizzerias, pretty squares and cafes to keep you going. Or, simply admire the hills that flank Lake Como from the privacy of your sprawling, waterfront terrace. A dining table beneath the twisting vine of a pergola provides the alfresco dining spot and the piece de resistance is the plunge-style swimming pool for a cooling dip. Outdoor sofas, chairs and loungers are scattered across the terrace, so there’s no problem finding a spot to watch the sunset, cold drink in hand. 

Within the villa, you’ve got three grand lounges to choose from, allowing the group to spread out in style. Seclude yourself away in the light-filled lounge with arched old windows looking out over the lake, or retire to the dusky violet and velvet purple lounge for a glass of red by the marble fireplace. There’s also a family snug for a more casual evening on comfy sofas. A long atrium of glass walls is home to one of the sunniest games rooms we’ve seen – with a library of books, ping pong and foosball. Each bedroom has its own style, from vast spaces sunlit by French windows to cosy, book-filled nooks. Every wrought-iron bed, old writing bureau and botanical prints feel as though it’s been carefully curated for each room.

If you’re after a peaceful break on the shore of Lake Como, then look no further than this home in the heart of Torno. The train station is within easy walking distance, so day trips to Como couldn’t be easier. Or, if you’d prefer to hire a car, you'll find parking on the premises. We also like the bathtub facing the door so you can even admire the views from inside. Because of the perched location of this home, you'll have to climb steps up to it, but it'll all be worth it for the breathtaking panorama of Lake Como. Speak to your host about boat trips, helicopter rides and more.

The Lake

One glance at those Lake Como views and you'll fall in love with this cosy and romantic flat. There's nothing better than sitting around the dining table, sipping wine, nibbling on antipasti and watching the water ebb and flow out the window. Later on, snuggle up on the cushy sofas with a book or get comfortable in the bedrooms, resting up for an adventure-filled day. The design is a delightful mishmash of mid-century modern, classic Italian character and clean, contemporary style. Although it's compact, the cheery yellow kitchen is sure to put a smile on your face as you're rustling up breakfast, and with two showers, you won't have to worry about queuing in the mornings.

Location-wise, Carate Urio has oodles of old-world charm and an authentic, local atmosphere. This breathtaking former quarryman's cottage offers you the ultimate escape. It's only accessible from the water so you're free to get on with the important business of relaxing. Alternatively, take inspiration from its owner, renowned author and journalist Guiseppe Guin, and crack on with that book you've always had inside you, free from the noise and distractions of everyday life.

Inside, exposed stone walls lined with leather-bound books, an antique stove, and a kitchen carved from granite make the home feel like a place out of time. With its lakeside setting on a wooded hillside, there's definitely a 'Lord of the Rings' vibe about it.

Two double en-suite bedrooms continue the theme, with plenty of curios and trinkets lining the walls. Just choose between the lake view room, where you'll hear the sound of the waves lapping at the shore, or the forest view chamber that looks out through the laurel trees.

Secret Window

If you’re seeking the kind of serenity that comes from enjoying far-reaching views across a glassy lake, this could be the home for you. As you’d expect with a studio, space is limited here, but it’s a cosy place for two. And, step out into the garden, and you can while away the hours drinking in the vistas over a bottle of wine. The kitchenette is ideal for basic food, but for a substantial meal full of authentic Italian flavours, head to one of the many local restaurants in Laglio for a dinner to remember.

Overlooking Lake Como, this quintessentially Italian house caught our eye for its fantastic views. The outdoor space may not be huge, but the dramatic vistas of the lake and surrounding mountains certainly make up for that. What’s more, they can be enjoyed from every room in the home, as well as from the poolside. Located in the pretty hillside village of Moltrasio, with its lakeside cafes, steep streets and small harbour, holidays here are all about taking it easy and enjoying the spectacular scenery.

We love the vistas over Lake Como from this apartment’s Juliet balconies in the living room and bedroom. On a practical note, the living area can get a bit cramped if four guests stay, as two will be sleeping on a sofa bed here. Also, the kitchenette doesn’t have an oven or much food preparation space, so it’s best suited to making snacks and light meals. Luckily, there are a couple of eateries nearby. This home is situated in Carate Urio on the western shore of Lake Como, with lots of residential villas. If you fancy going on a boat trip to explore Lake Como’s other towns, take a ten-minute walk to Urio’s dock.

Perched by Lake Como, this villa caught our eye thanks to its beautiful surroundings – best enjoyed from the infinity pool or terrace. Inside, sliding doors connect the open living space to the outdoor area, where you'll find sun loungers, a dining table, and a barbecue. Spread over four floors with an internal lift, there's also a fully equipped home gym, complete with a sauna and spa shower. Upstairs, two of the bedrooms benefit from sweeping lake views, and there's a study area for those working remotely. And, when you're ready to explore, it's just a short drive from the city of Como – the villa also comes with garage parking.

Welcome to this scenic home in Moltrasio. With sweeping views of Lake Como, you couldn't ask for a more perfect setting. We think it works well as a family base, as the third bedroom has bunk beds that are ideal for little ones. At the heart of this dreamy apartment is a spectacular veranda terrace that will have you pinching yourself as you look out across the lake. Stylishly furnished, this home is as resplendent inside as it is outside, benefitting from calming open spaces bathed in natural light that are well suited for small gatherings with friends or family. Wake up and enjoy an al fresco breakfast on the terrace as you watch the sun rise over the water. We can think of nothing better than sitting back with a good book on one of the loungers and listening to the busy streets of Como below as you bask in the heat and sip cocktails above. Make the most of the location and arrange a sailing or boat tour along the river – a ten-minute walk down the road. Enjoy a scoop of gelato as you meander through the pretty avenues and gardens, and be sure to explore the city’s architectural landmarks and historical sights. Arrive in style at this lakeside property on board a resplendent Riva speedboat, thanks to its private jetty. Disembark and step inside to discover a spacious and stylish open-plan living area and kitchen, kitted out with all the culinary accoutrements you might need to whip up delicious homemade meals, just like nonna used to make.

From the living room, not only will you enjoy access to a private balcony through two sets of French doors, but also awe-inspiring panoramic views capable of bringing a tear to the eye. The soothing atmosphere of the bedrooms will help you relax after your journey, while there's a good amount of storage space so you can unpack and settle in. The main bedroom even finds room for a desk and enjoys access to an en-suite shower room.

When you're not sunbathing and swimming in the lake, explore the surrounding village of Laglio. With slopes full of vineyards and olive groves, and pastel-coloured villas, it's one of the most elegant lakeside locations. But don't take our word for it. George Clooney purchased his nearby eighteenth-century estate back in 2002 and still returns multiple times a year, some two decades later.

It's fair to say that Lake Como isn't exactly short of awe-inspiring views, but the panorama enjoyed from this home's terrace is nothing short of sensational. Thanks to the prime position six hundred metres above the banks, guests are treated to a sweeping vista of the sparkling lake, verdant hillside, clusters of villages and a huge expanse of sky.

It says a lot about this home — a tower dating back to the end of the eighteenth century — that this isn't the only standout feature. Staying outside, there's a long swimming pool and a spa tub, plus plenty of loungers for soaking up the sunshine. If the weather's kind — which it all too often is here — there's no excuse not to fire up the barbecue and serve up something grilled to perfection for dinner.

Inside, there's certainly a rustic feel to the design, thanks to the wooden ceiling beams and terracotta tiles underfoot, but there are plenty of modern amenities to be found, too. There's also a pool table if you want to challenge a family member or friend.

The surrounding medieval village of Palanzo is as authentic as you could wish for, all narrow alleys, stone houses and even a small restaurant. The lake itself can be reached in around fifteen minutes' drive, while the city of Como takes half an hour.

This contemporary apartment is located in Via Tommaso Grossi in Como, offering panoramic views of the city and lake from the communal rooftop terrace. We love the sleek interiors of this home, which provides a comfortable stay for a family or group of friends. Just note – as a party of five, two people will draw the short straw and sleep on the sofa bed in the living room. Still, it’s a sacrifice we’d be willing to make for this pad’s enviable location. If the views tempt you out for a meander, you’ll find Como at your feet just waiting to be explored.

Relax and unwind in your comfortable apartment. In the morning, potter around at your leisure before heading out for the day.

Visit the famous Como Cathedral constructed in the 14th Century then head over to the Como Archaeological Museum in Palazzo Giovio. At the water's edge, take the funicular up to the charming town of Brunate where you'll revel in jaw-dropping views of the lake. Later in the afternoon, go on an unforgettable woodland walk to the Baroque Villa Balbianello, where you'll sit on the terrace with gelato and admire the views of Vergonese and Bellagio off in the distance – we loved making memories that will last a lifetime.

This home, while compact, still oozes grandeur. The lovely high ceilings and multiple huge windows play a part. But there are other carefully considered details that give this apartment some extra oomph – light fittings are bold as brass, while the marble floor tiles and polished granite tabletop add some serious class. The ice machine in the high-spec kitchen is perfect for that cold Aperol Spritz you’ll be sipping by the window in the sunshine. In the lounge, the wall-mounted TV comes preloaded with Netflix, but there are restaurants and bars aplenty right on your doorstep as you’re right on the main square, so you might never reach for the remote. Even better, the serene shore of Lake Como is only a short stroll away, so hop in a water taxi and explore the pretty villas and villages of the lakeside. Return to your decadent floral bedroom where the marble in the en-suite adds to the glam.

Positioned close to the centre of the lakeside town of Cernobbio, this light and spacious apartment keeps good company, a stone's throw from some of Lake Como's most illustrious villas.

The open-plan interior is chic and contemporary, which will appeal to lovers of an uncluttered, minimalist aesthetic. Head through to the two bedrooms and you'll discover that they follow a similar ethos, with gold accents adding a touch of glamour to proceedings.

Step outside and discover Villa Bernasconi just steps away – one of the best examples of Art Nouveau architecture in the whole of Italy. Walk towards the lake and you'll encounter Villa Erba, which is used to host some of the most exclusive events in the world, as well as making cameos in the occasional Hollywood movie. For the outdoorsy types, Cernobbio is the jumping-off point for many picturesque mountain hikes including the eighty-eight mile Via dei Monti Lariani, though you're more than welcome just to do a small section.

You’ll find this unique home in the heart of Como, a mere seven-minute walk from the eponymous lake. Once an ice house, the place has been transformed into a cosy apartment – we loved the mezzanine level with frosted glass floor and the comfy crescent sofa that complements the curves of the ancient walls. There’s a kitchenette for whipping up quick snacks, but if you’ve got a hankering for hearty Lombardy fare, you’re only footsteps from traditional osterie. 

Spend afternoons navigating Como’s narrow cobbled streets, nipping in and out of artisanal boutiques before finding a spot by the water with an aperitvo. If you’re keen to explore further afield, catch the ferry to Bellagio – it’ll take around forty-four minutes – and stroll around the peaceful Villa Melzi gardens.

Stone Curves

Set in the village of Brunate, this home offers wonderful views of Lake Como from its large terrace. Inside this apartment is impressive too with its high ceilings in the open-plan living space – there’s a second living area on the mezzanine too. Location-wise, there are a variety of local eateries and artisan shops or take a ride over to the city of Como where you’ll find an array of attractions. Or you can immerse yourself in nature with the many hiking trails through the forests here.

Now that's what we call a view. Located in the charming town of Nesso, this apartment offers breathtaking views of Lake Como. You can admire the panoramas from the balcony, or watch the waves roll in while swimming in the shared pool. Vistas aside, the apartment is sleek and contemporary. There's a sofa bed for a third guest, but we think it would be a better fit for two. In terms of location, Como is twenty minutes away, making it an excellent starting point for exploring the region.

Echo of the Water

Set in a quiet residential area yet just a short stroll from Como's lakeside and the Duomo, the setting of these two apartments is spot-on. Ideal for two couples wanting to holiday together without overcrowding each other, each apartment is self-contained for a little extra privacy. While the balcony and terrace are a bonus, the living spaces are pocket-sized – especially if you use the sofa bed in the lounge. Don't expect to rustle up much more than breakfast or a light bite in the compact kitchenettes, either. But with so many charming restaurants just a stroll away, we suspect you'll be eating out anyway.

If you’re searching for somewhere you can just drop off your bags and head straight out to explore, this could be the home for you. Nestled in the heart of Como, this home has elegance running through its core. Ideal for a small family or group of friends, this apartment is kitted out with everything for a relaxing stay. But, the cherry on top for us is the location. Mere steps from the Duomo and the tranquil shores of Lake Como, ticking off the city’s hotspots is easy here.

If you’ve ever fleetingly imagined another life for yourself – drinking espresso in your stylish Italian apartment as the sun streams in through the tall windows, maybe – then welcome to your Como abode. Framed by wooden shutters, the wonderful huge windows define every room, letting light dapple over the beautiful parquet floor. Period and contemporary pieces blend to give this home its tasteful yet welcoming feel – see the wooden dining table with accompanying designer chairs. And with air conditioning and an in-home washing machine, there’s no compromise on functionality. The huge living space is great for hanging out after a day of sightseeing, and we love the super squishy corner sofa. Crucially, the home is right in the heart of the pedestrian part of the city. You're right next to Palazzo Garibaldi, and plenty of restaurants, shops, bars. It's a short walk to the waterfront promenade too – we've taken longer to polish off a gelato.

While a little less humble than Madonna's lakeside villa, you can get a slice of the star's lifestyle by staying in this renovated top-floor apartment, with a terrace overlooking the terracotta rooftops of Como city. A romantic spot, with its grey and white scheme, chandeliers and opulent queen-size bed, it makes the perfect northern Italian break for two. It's within easy reach of lakeside restaurants, walking routes and boat trips. Thick stone walls keep it warm in winter and cool in summer, but there’s also air conditioning, so you can always escape the midday heat. Should you ever need a little more action, it’s just an hour’s drive to Milan’s main airports and into the city itself, for shopping, restaurants and unmissable sights like the Duomo.
