Practical in all the right ways, this minimalist home sits near the western shores of Laka Garda. You can't beat the location. It's just a short stroll to the lakefront promenade and beaches, not to mention only 250 metres from the restaurants, gelaterias, and shops in Toscolano. Back home, a sunny garden and private pool provide plenty of entertainment. A couple of sofa beds keep sleeping arrangements flexible here, and while some of the design is a little dated, we think it'll do just fine for a family getaway.

Throw in the typical architecture, rustic decor – though it might not be to everyone's taste – and ample space and we had to add it to our collection.

We couldn’t think of a better spot to admire the views across Lake Garda than from the garden of this home. There’s a private pool, a jacuzzi and a perfectly positioned terrace – a sweet setting for sunset drinks. You will need a car to get around here, but it’s just 5 kilometres to the nearest town of Salò where you’ll find the beach along with a great selection of restaurants and shops.

A ten-minute walk from Italy's largest lake, Garda, this villa celebrates the iconic landmark with a terrace and private pool to admire the views. This lakeside villa was built with larger groups in mind. With three large lounges, a pool complete with pool house and an extensive outdoor deck, you can take your pick of places to spend time with friends. If you don’t want to miss the action but crave a little bit more me-time, you can always opt for the separate loft room; it comes with its own personal kitchenette (hello, late-night snacks). The home’s perfectly manicured garden is just steps away from Lake Garda – we can’t think of a set-up more perfect than this.

With two separate but connected apartments, you'll find the space ideal if you're travelling with two families – both floors offer views, and while downstairs has quick access to the pool, upstairs has its own terrace with an alfresco dining area to compensate. You always enjoy private access to the stony beach out front here, a space ideal for soaking up some sun on a sun lounger.

Located in a quiet spot on the western shores of Lake Garda, this villa offers a relaxing base from which to explore the historical, town of Salò. Close to the lake, a beach and the lovely Isola del Garda. You’ll have your own private spa here thanks to a sauna, Jacuzzi and Turkish bath, plus an outdoor swimming pool and lawned garden outside. If you’re looking for ways to keep the little ones entertained, the playground should do the trick, with a swing and slide for them to play on. When it comes to exploring, we’d recommend taking the bikes out for a cycle by the water.

This Lake Garda villa couldn't get closer to the water if it tried. Boasting a private swimming dock and boat mooring (complete with a canoe for exploring), and gently sloping waters for a paddle, it's perfect for guests looking to make the most of the priceless lake setting. Granted, the interiors may feel a little dated in places for some, but we'll excuse that for the monumental views, and the largest bedroom suite sleeping four is handy for a small family sharing. When you're ready to sample Lake Garda life, you're just a short walk from Bogliaco for an easy bite to eat and a short drive from the vibrant town of Toscolano-Maderno.

Designed by a well-respected 20th-century architect, this two-storey home on the Sirmio peninsula plants you onto sprawling lands that stretch out to a beach on Lake Garda. With stunning balcony views accessible to all the bedrooms and spots for alfresco dining, the outdoor areas are a big draw here, but the inside is a treat too. We were especially fond of the atmospheric study and elegant living room, both ideal spots for nightcaps. We could easily spend hours in the rooftop pool, lazily floating in the sunshine with a backdrop of exquisite scenery. 

After you’ve dried off in the sun, head into the historic centre of Padenghe and enjoy lunch in a trattoria. Wander the streets with a gelato, or call into cafes for coffee and watch the world go by – there’s no need to rush, you’re in Italy after all. The jewel in Padenghe’s crown is undoubtedly the castle; whether you’re a history buff or you’re just in it for the views of Garda, it’s well worth strolling five minutes up the hill to explore. Further afield, beautiful Sirmione is less than ten miles away. 

However you spend your stay, make sure you spend at least one evening on the terrace with a glass of something local, watching the sun set slowly over the lake. If you’re anything like us, you’d kick yourself for missing it.

After breakfast, head to the gated outdoor pool for a morning of swimming and playing on the trampoline, or hop in your car and you'll be by the lakeshore in a little over five minutes. 

From your home, it's a short walk into the village of Soiano del Lago, with its grocery shop and small restaurants, making this the ideal choice for a quiet family holiday away from the hustle and bustle of the busy resorts. Drive to the nearby beaches for fun at the lake, or spend a day at one of the nearby amusement parks – Gardaland is around half an hour's drive away.

As soon as you approach this lovely home's building, you're greeted with a beautiful pond with a fountain and colourful fish – we felt an air of calm straight away. The garden has an even bigger pond – the shared swimming pool is perfect for cooling off in the Italian heat or simply relax with a book on the lounger.

Inside the apartment, there are characterful exposed beams and terracotta tiled floors. Another stand-out feature of this home is the main bathroom which has Swarovski crystals set in the furniture and on the washbasin – we do love a bit of bling.

Situated a few steps from Spiaggia D'oro and the centre of Desenzano del Garda, it has a fabulous location. If you have kids with you, there's a playground 50 metres away too.
