Racing fans might know Mugello for its circuit, but away from the petrol and screeching tyres, the Mugello countryside is a truly serene Tuscan gem. Just a twenty-five-minute drive from this famous track, and an hour from Florence, this rustic villa is a charming escape to rural life. Set on sloped, landscaped gardens with leafy trees, trailing foliage, and bright Mediterranean flowers, its traditional airs give way to some playful features. Keep the kids entertained with football on the five-a-side pitch in the garden, or head inside via the basement for foosball and a vintage pinball machine (‘big kids’ also welcome). Some might prefer a swim in the private pool, or sipping a negroni on one of the multiple patios, the choice is yours. You’ll also have plenty of choice for indoor relaxation, with three living rooms – one for every floor – and a delightful terrace upstairs where you can sip your espresso every morning. After a day exploring the rolling hills of Tuscany in the hot sun, we can’t think of anything better than coming home to a chilled glass of prosecco in this rural manor.

It’s just outside of the charming town of Scarperia and only thirty minutes from Florence, tucked away amid rolling countryside. It’s an excellent area for cycling, with bikes and e-bikes available for hire – exploring the scenic routes and nearby vineyards is a delightful way to spend a day. The apartment features a vaulted roof and simple, fuss-free decor. It’s a comfortable and charming base for a holiday, and you’ll have access to the communal gardens and heated plunge pool – what more could you ask for?

This former hunting lodge was once used by the wealthy and powerful Medici family. Steeped in history, it sits in the green hills of the Florentine Mugello, with its own large gardens surrounded by vineyards. There are remnants of the past everywhere, with ancient beamed ceilings, archways and tiled floors, but it's been carefully brought up to date with an eclectic mix of vintage and modern furnishings. And need we point out those fabulous chandeliers in some of the bedrooms? Take the sweeping steps down to the pool or pull up a lounger amid the scented flowers and lemon trees. Walking in the garden here, you’ll also find an area dedicated to aromatic herbs – the perfect addition to a Tuscan lunch in the dining area under a wisteria-covered pergola. Located up in the hills, you'll discover a spectacular villa – complete with a clock tower – just outside the small village of Cellai, where time seems to stand still.

Ideal for families, this home boasts a volleyball court, football pitch and ping pong table, along with a swimming pool. There’s a wood-fired oven outside, and a lovely outdoor dining set up. We recommend hiring a car so you can drive to nearby Ravenna and Forli, and admire the countryside on the way. 


The Renaissance Grand Tour

Perched on the slopes of the Chianti hills, this stone villa effortlessly blends traditional Tuscan farmhouse charm with modern comforts. Since children under six aren’t permitted here, this villa is a perfect spot for a group seeking a retreat amongst sprawling gardens. There’s a separate cottage for guests seeking a little extra privacy, while the outdoor terrace is perfect for sharing Tuscan dishes all together (your host even produces their own olive oil and wine). Located near the village of Radda in Chianti, you’re perfectly placed for hiking the Tuscan hills or visiting one of the many vineyards that the region is known for.

This home encourages outdoor living, with charming dining areas dotted around the garden – our favourite being the idyllic little lavender-draped corner, boasting stunning views down the hill. Dine al fresco long into the balmy summer evenings with a much larger eating space on the shaded terrace, equipped with reclining wooden chairs, an outdoor kitchen, and a barbecue. Tear apart the focaccia and devour a chilled glass of vino, socialising and playing games while the meat sizzles away. When you’re not indulging in the local delicacies, explore the cobblestone streets of Lucca at your feet, just a short drive down.

This charming apartment is located in perfect tranquillity inside a converted ancient palace, where the environment has been impeccably refurbished whilst respecting the original structure. We love how much greenery surrounds this home, and how it can make you appreciate the simple things in life as you take a long walk through the flora, breathing in the fresh air and listening to the bird's chirp. The wooden beams definitely give this home the character it deserves, as do the shutters that can be opened to let in light as you gaze out over the trees of an ancient noble villa.
 
When you want to be a part of the city's hustle and bustle, take the sixteen-minute drive to Lucca and bike along the city walls, losing yourself in the history of what would've been, before indulging in some retail therapy in the Old Town. Admire Piazza dell'Anfiteatro, a magnificent square constructed on the ruins of the ancient Roman amphitheatre that spreads a mix of historical beauty and true Italian flavour – stop for a bite to eat in the courtyard with innumerable cafes and restaurants.

Nestled amongst the Tuscan hills, this generous villa is split across two buildings and is well-equipped for large groups or families. The rustic interiors won’t be everyone’s cup of tea but the private swimming pool and manicured garden guarantee a relaxing stay. If you find yourself in the mood for socialising, the large outdoor dining area is the perfect place for an alfresco dinner. The location is fairly remote and well suited to those who are keen to explore the countryside and vineyards, but if you are looking for a day trip, Lucca isn’t too far away.

You can arrive in style at this palatial farmhouse fringing the hilltop commune of Castellina (2.7km) - there's a private helipad should you need it. Set within easy driving distance of Siena, San Gimignano and Florence for day trips, and with the bustling restaurants of Castellina close by, it’s an excellent base to explore Tuscany. There are plenty of reasons to linger at home, too – starting with those monumental views from the wraparound loggia for alfresco dining. Kids will love you for the private pool, gently sloping lawns for a runabout and table tennis. Meanwhile, adults can factor in some downtime in the private sauna.

This holiday home is immersed in the countryside of Florence, just forty minutes from the historic city. Despite its proximity to one of Italy’s most popular tourist spots, it’s a tranquil base, perfect for those seeking rest and relaxation. We love the private pool and the veranda, which is ideal for barbecues and sipping local wine. The views are magnificent, as the home is surrounded by lush greenery. The home itself is traditional and rustic, with exposed beams and tiled floors. The sleeping arrangements aren’t the most private, with two guests on a sofa bed and the other three sharing the bedroom. Still, this home has charm in abundance so we think it’s a good shout for families.

Set on an estate dotted with trees, shrubs, and other native foliage, this home ecompasses the entire first floor of an ancient villa in Orentano. Despite sharing things like the pool, tennis court, and soccer field with another home, there is enough room on the property for it to still feel private. That’s probably helped along by the fact that you have your own private garden and barbecue – not to mention the sheer size of the home itself. Move easily between rooms and use the easy go-between as an excuse to nip into the kitchen for another cup of coffee and a dozen more biscotti to take back to where you’re reading on the plush sofa. Take the spiral staircase up to the loft where you’ll find the rustic bedrooms and bathrooms for when you’re ready to turn in at night. When you think loft, you might conjure up images of a tight squeeze, but the addition of the skylights in almost every room here allows the light to make the space feel more open. 

With the host and his family living on the estate, you’ll sometimes find yourself around the table enjoying their homemade pasta alfresco with soft music playing in the background. There’s also a brick pizza oven here, so don’t be surprised if you eat more margarita than you’d care to – we know, that is not even remotely possible. 

When you’re not enjoying the home, you can make a trip to Pisa, Voltera, or Florence – each with their unique charm – or borrow the bicycles and simply explore the surroundings on two wheels instead of four. After a day of activity under the Tuscan sun, take a late-night swim in the heated pool, and when you’re ready to return inside, why not linger a little while longer to gaze up at the stars.

Settings rarely get more picturesque than this – we can already picture lazy afternoons by the private pool and alfresco drinks on the covered terrace, all while admiring the views. You'll have double the space here, too, since the home is two separate apartments. Location-wise, it's halfway between Florence and Siena, so the possibilities for day trips and adventures around Tuscany are endless.
