This magnificent yellow house sits in the rolling countryside between Lucca and Tuscany, offering incredible views of this lush, green part of Italy. The home is elegant and unique, with ceiling frescoes in the bedrooms and even a consecrated chapel in the grounds – this would be a magical setting for a wedding. 

Special events aside, this is a wonderful holiday home whether you’re travelling with friends or family. There’s plenty of room, including a spacious traditional kitchen – why not hire a private chef and enjoy an alfresco feast on the terrace? The outdoor space is marvellous, set over several terraced levels. The result is incredible views of the Tuscan countryside from every angle. The swimming pool is sheltered from view by a row of trees on one side, and open to sweeping views on the other – it’s glorious at any time of day, but we’re particularly fond of a sunset swim. 

The villa is only a thirty-minute drive from Lucca, and within easy reach of Florence too – the train to Florence takes an hour and eleven minutes. Spend a morning in Lucca admiring the architecture from a picturesque square, then stroll around the medieval centre with a gelato. For some top-notch relaxation, we recommend driving fourteen minutes to Montecatini Terme. This gem of a town boasts nine thermal spas housed in historic buildings – it feels like stepping back in time in the best way. 

There’s so much to see and do in this beautiful part of Italy, and this spectacular home is the ideal base from which to explore. When you’ve taken in all the sights you can manage, recline on the terrace with a glass of Chianti. Bliss.

Whereas most homes give you a single terrace if you're lucky, this Tuscan property spoils you with outdoor spaces. As well as a lounge given some shade by a large parasol, there's also a separate deck with an alfresco dining table and a stone barbecue, plus another area that holds a swimming pool.

Although we're betting you'll be spending most of your time in the open air, the interior is also pleasing to the eye as well. Through the arched doorways, guests will be greeted by a rustic interior, complete with cooling tiles on the floor, patterned walls in the kitchen and lots of botanical-themed artwork dotted about the place.

The local village of Vellano can be reached in around ten minutes' stroll and has a couple of restaurants for when you get peckish. Further afield, there are Tuscan towns that can be reached in under an hour's drive, such as Montecatini Terme, Lucca and Pistoia. If you're up for a slightly longer journey, Florence is only an hour and twenty minutes' drive from the home.

This rustic farmhouse surrounded by picturesque hills makes for a restful Tuscan retreat. The interiors are a little dated in parts, but perfectly comfortable for a rural stay – the dining room with panoramic windows is a highlight. Outside, the terrace offers swing seats, loungers and a dining area, so you can maximise every moment with those country views. The unpaved track to this house is a little tricky to navigate, so it’s not the best for low-suspension cars. Nearby you’ll find Pescia’s authentic restaurants and shops, while Lucca lies less than 25km away should you feel like a day in the city.

The layout here won’t suit everyone – the home is spread over several floors and one of the staircases is open – and the traditional decor won’t be to everyone’s tastes, but it’s a great option for those seeking a house with personality. Blessed with an isolated spot in the Tuscan hills, there's something rather tranquil about this home and you're sure to find it easy to relax, whether you're splashing about in the swimming pool, cooking up dinner in the summer kitchen or simply admiring the beautiful views.

There's a lot to like about the home itself, too. Dating back to the 17th century and spending much of its life as a farmhouse, the living quarters are understandably a little traditional – note the stone archways, wooden ceiling beams and terracotta tiling underfoot. There are some more contemporary aspects though, including the recently renovated kitchen and Jacuzzi bathtub.

When it comes to getting to know Tuscany a little better, the town of Montecatini Terme is only 10km and has nine thermal spas to visit. A little further afield, the Renaissance-era architecture of Lucca is 30km away, while Viareggio's beach is 55km from the home – close enough for a day trip or two, we'd say.

If you’re looking for local immersion in a quintessentially Tuscan home, you've found it. Once the lowly hayloft of a country retreat for nobles, it’s been elevated to something wonderful. It’s rustic – think exposed brick, cooling stone floors and original wood beams – but with the kind of luxe touches that wouldn’t look out of place in a Renaissance townhouse. We love the juxtaposition of homely vibes with ornate flourishes. Who knew chandeliers could look so good in a barn? Set on a private estate, with lush gardens all around, the owners are your only neighbours. Signora Rosa will welcome you with open arms (and maybe even a slice of homemade torta), and the whole family is on hand to help, while also respecting your privacy. There are two complimentary bicycles available for guests, making the five-minute walk to the local town even quicker. Here you can pick up groceries to cook up an alfresco feast; you’ll want to make use of the pretty, shaded outdoor dining area with views over the immaculate grounds. There’s even a wood-fired pizza oven, so you’d better start practising your dough spinning. We’d happily hole up in this place for a week or two, but with a car, it’s the perfect base for exploring Tuscany.

Decadent in every sense of the word, this villa in the Tuscan countryside is a dream come true, as far as we're concerned. Owned by a bespoke interior designer, it should come as no surprise that every room is a treasure trove, filled with plush furniture, eclectic knick-knacks, antique furniture and that unique designer touch that makes it sing. Historic character is around every corner – we're particularly fond of the wooden beams and brick ceilings – but all the mod-cons are accounted for, including a stunning chef's kitchen perfect for meal prepping and small, luxurious bathrooms complete with rainfall showers.

But there's no denying that the garden is the best part of all. Romantic and magical, we'd happily spend all our time out here, admiring the medieval architecture of the 10th-century church next door. While away lazy afternoons swimming in the private pool, sunbathing on the lounge chairs and reading in the gazebo. Come dinnertime, share an Italian feast and a bottle of Tuscan wine under the leafy pergola as the night falls, surrounded by twinkling fairy lights. When you're ready to venture out, Tuscany's main sights are all reachable by car – including Florence, Lucca and Pistoia – but we're just as happy to stay local and discover Montecarlo's traditional eateries, wineries and medieval fortress.

Evenings are particularly enchanting, and you’ll no doubt find yourself organising elegant suppers and aperitivos, with the glow of the setting sun as your backdrop. The covered, outdoor dining area invites those communal feasts, with the laid-back, dolce-far-niente vibe. In the heat of the afternoon sun, you can cool yourself in the lovely swimming pool, and work on your tan on one of the sun loungers dotted around.

It's situated on a private country estate in the charming village of Lamporecchio, Tuscany, and has well-tended secret gardens, as well as olive groves to explore. This breathtaking property is spread over two floors and benefits from a private patio and communal pool area – the latter of which is shared with four neighbouring properties. We love the master suite with its fireplace – a welcome feature during the cooler months. We suggest a car for ease –  there are restaurants less than 2km away and the pretty town of Montecatini is 15km from the home.

Just a short drive from Lucca, this traditional farmhouse opens its doors to the simple pleasures of Italian living. Consisting of a main house and an adjoining hayloft (with its own kitchen) which also has A/C, this is a great option for groups in search of peace, privacy and a beautiful setting. The private pool is ideal for afternoon dips, and there's a large garden and plenty to explore in the surroundings. Outside you can follow hiking trails straight from the door, while cities like Pisa and Florence are also within driving distance.

The home is comprised of three individual stone cottages perched on the Tuscan hillside, located in the pretty village of Ciciana. You’ll be surrounded by the vast, untouched countryside – hiking trails nearby will acquaint you with local farm animals and horses. At the centre of the home is a pristine saltwater infinity pool, benefitting from panoramic views of the surrounding green plains and the medieval town of Lucca below. This home encourages outdoor living, with charming dining areas dotted around the garden – our favourite being the idyllic little lavender-draped corner, boasting stunning views down the hill. Dine al fresco long into the balmy summer evenings with a much larger eating space on the shaded terrace, equipped with reclining wooden chairs, an outdoor kitchen, and a barbecue. Tear apart the focaccia and devour a chilled glass of vino, socialising and playing games while the meat sizzles away. When you’re not indulging in the local delicacies, explore the cobblestone streets of Lucca at your feet, just a short drive down.

A Dash Of Olive Oil

Sitting among the green hills of the Valdinievole, this quintessentially Tuscan villa puts guests in the middle of some truly gorgeous scenery, while offering plenty to do should they ever tire of the views – although we think that's unlikely to happen.

During the warmer months, it's not difficult to imagine countless hours spent in the home's outdoor space. The swimming pool is sure to be popular on summer afternoons, but you can just as easily enjoy the sunshine while playing table tennis on the terrace or enjoying hearty alfresco feasts on the pergola.

The home itself is fairly traditional in character, with wooden beams and exposed stonework lending a certain rustic charm. That being said, you can tell from the wealth of contemporary features that the host has put a lot of effort into the interior in recent years – the sleek kitchen and upper-floor Turkish bath are a bit of a giveaway, as are the bar games and decorative motorcycle that all add a bit of Americana to proceedings.

You can see a whole lot of Tuscany from the home's balconies and terrace, but if you ever want a bit more of a close-up, the thermal baths and opulent villas in the spa town of Montecatini Terme are 4km away, while the medieval city of Pistoia is around 15km away.

Between the ancient majesty of Florence and the walled city of Lucca, this stately residence will drop you straight into 19th Century Tuscany. This rousing region of Italy is a sight to behold, and it’s easy to believe the landscape hasn’t changed much since this home was first built. The history of the province runs deep and leads straight through the centre of this grand villa. Each of the rooms has its own thrilling touch of a bygone age, with guests getting to live a piece of it. Take a quiet moment with a good book in one of the parlours, or head out onto the lawn and sip your morning espresso with nothing but the birds and the stunning views.

One of our favourite rooms is the detached dining hall with its curved ceiling and long table. It speaks of grand old parties where the wine flowed well into the early hours. This is a villa of a golden age, a haven of exploration, and a memorable place to assemble your crew for a getaway. 

For those looking to get out and see the sights, the breathtaking city of Florence is a little under an hour's drive away, and boasts a wealth of shopping, dining, and sightseeing opportunities, including Galleria dell'Accademia and Basilica di Santa Croce, or if getting back to nature is what you're looking for, you're in luck. Grab your most comfortable walking shoes and lose yourself in the wilds of the Florentine countryside, right from your front door.

Olive Groves Of Old

Sitting pretty in the Tuscan Hills, this charmingly rustic villa offers a glimpse at what feels like a traditional Italian home – think ceiling beams, exposed brick walls and a sweet little kitchen that has just the things you need. The brightly coloured walls will add energy and Italian-style verve to your day, while the views make getting out of bed each morning a treat. The gardens are lush and sprawling and provide plenty of space to roam about or play games. Come evening, be sure to light up the barbecue, enjoy a few poolside drinks and end with a drawn-out dinner on the terrace.

Terracotta Paintbrush

Fit for royalty, this beautiful home sits in an estate once owned by Elisa Bonaparte, the former princess of Lucca and sister of Napoleon. It boasts panoramic views of the Tuscan countryside and a lush garden. You’ll have a pool with a Jacuzzi corner to unwind in, and if you fancy stretching your legs, you can set off on walking trails amid the vineyards. We love the Tuscan charm of the villa, with its beamed ceilings and terracotta floors – though there are plenty of modern amenities to ensure that your stay is a comfortable one, including a sauna. 


The Royal Estate

Just outside the famed artist town of Montecatini Terme, this sprawling villa in the Tuscan countryside is well-placed for exploring not only nearby Florence, but lovely Lucca as well. But while we love the position of this home, we think some guests might end up finding it difficult to leave the premises – with a beautiful mature garden and large swimming pool, this home’s many charms are capped off by a floodlit private tennis court, ping pong table, foosball, and a children’s play area. And that’s before we get to the horses. Keen equestrians – or just the horse curious – will love the fact that this home is neighboured by horse paddocks, with riding lessons and excursions available on request. Inside, the home is decorated in the traditional Tuscan manner, with classic tiling, exposed ceiling beams, and classic furnishings all in evidence. There’s a separate apartment available too, which we think would work wonders for families or friends travelling together. Not that you’ll be spending much time indoors though – with covered terraces, plenty of sun loungers round the pool, and shady spots set up under the trees, this is a home that revels in indoor-outdoor living.

A Little Horse Play

In the beautiful Tuscan countryside outside Lucca (a twenty-minute drive away), this villa epitomises la dolce vita. From your vantage point atop a verdant hill, you can gaze out over vineyards and olive groves – explore the local area by car for tastings at local wineries and olive farms. Perhaps bring back some spoils for a spot of aperitivo on the terrace. There are plenty of patios, balconies and shaded leafy nooks to choose from in the garden. Day beds and loungers line the poolside and the view from here, over the misty Tuscan hills all the way to Lucca, is particularly magnificent at sunset. 

The villa itself is a traditional medley of thick stone walls and a terracotta roof; just like the Tuscan farmhouses of old. The decor leans into the rustic vibe with wooden ceilings and stone walls on display, alongside ancient stone hearths in the living room and dining room. A mish-mash of dark wood antique furniture and floral sofas feel straight from the 19th century and a brickwork floor keeps things cool underfoot. Bedrooms are a delight to wake up to, with panoramic countryside views from the wood-shuttered windows. 

Vines & Olive Trees

We love this charmingly rustic apartment high in the Tuscan hills. Boasting sweeping views of the valley below and under a thirty-minute drive from Lucca, this hillside home is also within easy reach of the medieval town of Pescia, where you’ll find twisting cobbled streets, ancient churches and palaces, as well as shops, restaurants, and gelaterias. The apartment’s open-plan living and dining area welcomes you with traditional timbered ceilings, a stone fireplace and a well-equipped kitchen. This room would be perfect for hanging out with friends and family – if you can stay away from the outdoor areas, that is. With a mature garden blooming with roses and lavender, panoramic views, and a shared pool, we bet you’ll find yourselves spending most of your time out here. And while much of the outdoor space is shared with the other apartments in the building, you get a private terrace designed for alfresco meals, evening aperitivi, and much more.
