Perched on a cliffside on the edge of Monte Argentario, the sunset views from this home are sublime. From the dining table on the terrace, you can gaze out over the sea and there are plenty of seating nooks in the shade. The real highlight is the private staircase leading down the cliffside to a rocky swim platform set up with loungers and parasols. Just remember, it’s quite a climb back up to the villa. The living room is huge, so big groups will feel at home here, and a wall of windows shows off the sea view inside. Tiles in the bathrooms might be a little garish for some, but who cares when the outside space comes with that view.

It’s all about the good life at this Italian villa. We’re not just talking la dolce vita, but the full, sustainable package. It’s on an enchanting eco lavender farm, so the fields around you are fragrant as perfume and the villa has its own orto (vegetable garden) which you’re welcome to harvest. Perhaps cook fresh-veg-topped pizzas in the antique pizza oven outdoors, and enjoy at one of two terraces, overlooking the rolling countryside. For days at home, there’s a sparkling swimming pool to cool off in, a petanque court and ping pong too. 

We’re impressed by this villa’s eco-credentials, supplied by renewable energy and with natural aromatherapy oils on offer from the lavender farm. Inside, it’s a calming medley of Japanese zen and Scandi-chic touches. The living room is set around a big fireplace and raw-wood tables and wicker lampshades are a nod to your natural surroundings. The kitchen could be the envy of any professional chef, with a huge, range-style cooker perfect for the fresh produce on your doorstep.

Getting out and exploring, you’ve got Italian countryside all around you and the village of Marsiliana is less than ten minutes drive away for supermarkets and pizzerias. Twenty minutes away you are spoiled for choice – from the charming medieval villages of Capalbio and Pitigliano to the glamorous beaches, bars and restaurants of the Silver Coast.

Set in the hills of San Casciano dei Bagni and Chiusi, this magnificent stone farmhouse straddles the border between two fairytale regions – Tuscany and Umbria. Explore both of their charming towns, cultures, and cuisines with ease from this central base. We recommend the neighbouring hillside towns of Cetona and San Casciano dei Bagni, but if you’d like to venture a bit further afield, the nearby railway station in Chiusi allows for breezy day trips to Cortona, Siena and Montepulciano. 

But for all that, you'll have more than enough to keep you busy with all this home has to offer. The well-selected modern furniture and fixtures blend beautifully with the terracotta floors, brick-vaulted ceilings, stone arches and fireplaces. The classical rustic interior transports you to the past, especially with the countryside views from nearly every room. 

And there’s a lot to see – sitting proudly on a five-hectare estate, the home looks out onto both cultivated land and woodland, a lush garden of flowers and cypress trees. Outside, the rolling landscape is best enjoyed by the shimmering stone pool or the romantic, shaded pergola. In the heat of the afternoon, read in the cool of the study before returning to the patio. Lounge until sunset, where the fiery colours linger longer, and are best enjoyed alongside a bold Tuscan red from the cellar.

This gorgeous pale stone house is tucked just outside of the small town of Palazzone in the Tuscan countryside. Far-reaching views of the lush countryside of Tuscany and Umbria make for a magnificent backdrop, complementing the centuries-old trees, olive groves, and meadows that surround the home. This is an idyll, where the scent of lavender carries on the breeze. 

The garden is a haven of tranquillity and natural beauty. Float in the swimming pool while you watch bees bob around the flowers, the hum of insects the only sound to disturb the peace. Less than a five-minute drive from the medieval village of Monteleone d'Orvieto, it’s a relaxing retreat full of sensory romance. Breathe in the sweet-smelling flowers that frame the home’s grounds, look out onto the forested paths beyond the front gates and feel right at home within its pretty pink walls. Inside, contemporary and vintage furnishings combine with an elaborate hearth and cowhide rug in the first-floor living room, while downstairs, rustic charm abounds in the bright, white dining room. This Suvereto apartment may be small, but what it lacks in size, it makes up for in charm. The window seat is our favourite spot – in the mornings, there's nothing better than enjoying an espresso as the smell of fresh-baked bread rises from the bakery below.

One of Tuscany's hidden gems, Suvereto is rife with old-world character – picture medieval walls, cobblestone streets and sidewalk cafes overlooking ancient churches. We love the laid-back pace of life here, but with vineyards, hiking trails and beaches like Spiaggia di Rimigliano all a short drive away, you'll be well-placed for exploring, too.

Time To Rise

You’ll find this rustic villa set among Tuscany’s rolling hills and endless countryside. Inside, there’s a warm ambience thanks to the terracotta tiles, homespun furnishings and farmhouse-style kitchen. If you’ll be spending time outside, we bet you’ll be relaxing by the private pool with a refreshing beverage in hand. Spend afternoons dipping in and out of the water before sitting down to an Italian-inspired feast at the alfresco dining table. 

If exploring sounds like a good idea, take the short drive to charming Chiusi for a stroll around the honey-hued streets and an espresso in a traditional cafe. Should a day trip be on the cards, travel north to Arezzo – visit the hilltop cathedral, Basilica di San Domenico and the imposing Medicean Fortress. Return to your abode in the early evening for a glass of wine or two on the terrace followed by a night of blissful sleep in the comfortable bedrooms.

Sunshine Burst

It's homes like this that give Tuscany its reputation as a blissful place which to retreat for a week or three. The surrounding landscape of vineyards and rolling hillsides is as picturesque as you could possibly imagine, while the home itself is bursting with character.

Much of this is down to its long history. Built at the end of the 18th century as a mill, it was converted into a farmhouse before becoming the handsome getaway you see today. This heritage is writ large across the interior, with stone archways, wooden ceiling beams and terracotta tiles underfoot a treat for those that melt at the sight of rustic design – which includes us. The more contemporary features – including the freestanding bathtub and modern kitchen – have been tastefully added to retain this inimitable charm.

Outside, it's a slightly different story. The hot tub and swimming pool in the middle of the garden are comparatively recent additions to the address but are no less welcome for it. As well as that, there are a couple of spots for alfresco feasts to dine among the fragrant flowers and trees that fill the grounds.

Although the location is certainly secluded, you don't have to venture far to find things to see and do. The medieval hilltop town of Montepulciano is only 4.5km away and is famous for its Renaissance-era buildings and globally-coveted wine. A little further afield, the cities of Perugia and Siena are 63 and 67km away respectively, so well within range for a day trip.

You’ll also find the beach at Baratti is within easy reach. 



Serenade Me

This cosy apartment lies in the heart of Massa Marittima, a Tuscan hidden gem. You won't find wi-fi here, and the decor is quite vintage with a style that might not be for everyone, but your host can provide a cot and high chair here, making it a great choice for families looking for a slower-paced holiday. You'll be just a five-minute walk from the centre of town with its local cafes and restaurants, and if you're driving then the golden sandy beaches of Follonica are just 20km away.

Charming Tuscan Retreat

This historic home dates back to the 16th century. Previously home to aristocratic families, it’s now been renovated into two holiday apartments, perfect for families or friends travelling together. The villa is surrounded by park-like gardens filled with olive trees and flowers and features a shared swimming pool. Inside, you can look forward to vaulted ceilings and well-thought-out interior design. With a maximum occupancy of eight, two guests will sleep on a sofa bed in the ground-floor living room. Should you need anything more, you’re just a one-minute drive from Sarteano, with its charming medieval houses, wine bars, restaurants and shops.

You can't beat the views of the beautiful Val D'Orcia, itself a UNESCO World Heritage Site, from this Tuscan farmhouse lying in the Siena Province on a private two-acre estate. Tear yourself away from the vistas, and you'll find a deft renovation, combining contemporary interiors and historic charm. An excellent choice for a large group of friends or family, there's plenty of space to spill out and feel at home here. Cool off from the Tuscan sun in the infinity pool. Put to use the vast, chef-worthy kitchen (we're talking two dishwashers, two ovens, and some) for a big dinner party – a private chef is bookable for fine dining. Or keep things easy and fire up the barbecue or pizza oven outside as breath-taking views of the valley spread out before you –  best seen beneath the pergola at sunset with a glass of something chilled. And on chiller nights, hunker down beside the fireplace with a good book – there are two living rooms to choose from. When it's time to lay your head, hop in the home's elevator and take your pick from the many bedrooms, boasting king-sized beds and separate bathrooms. We'll let you decide who lucks out on that ground floor suite with bi-folds opening onto the lawned gardens. Should you ever wish to leave this idyll, you'll find you're in an excellent base to uncover Tuscany's vineyards and historic villages, starting in Sarteano, just a ten-minute drive away. With its tempting trattorias and beguiling historic charms, you'll be off to a flying start.
