The sunny, hilly garden with its olive and cypress trees extends for more than 1500m2. Enjoy a Tuscan feast in the outdoor dining area – we adore the views from here. Or have a glass of Prosecco in the secluded hot tub located on a rock. There's a gorgeous swimming pool, too, overlooking the sea and the valley.

Inside, we love the chic interpretation of the rustic interior style. Select a bottle of wine from the cellar and cosy up in front of one of the fires if the weather turns chilly. This place is perfect for a family or group of friends looking for complete tranquillity.

If you can tear yourself away from this Italian paradise, there are plenty of treasures to explore. The medieval town of Pietrasanta is 15 kilometres away, while it's 20 kilometres from the seaside city of Viareggio. Whether you're enjoying a glass of wine on the terrace or floating in the shared swimming pool, the mountain views here are sure to set the scene for an unforgettable stay in the Province of Lucca. This ancient Tuscan hamlet (or ‘borgo’) sits atop a hill, with views over the countryside as far as the eye can see. On a clear day, you can catch a glimpse of Corsica on the horizon. Surrounded by olive groves, organic vegetable gardens, ancient trees and donkey paddocks, this is the place to immerse yourself in provincial Italian life. Plus, the cities of Pisa and Lucca are within day-tripping distance.

Designed by architect Stefano Viviani, this villa blends into the landscape seamlessly. The wooden terrace juts out of the hillside, allowing for panoramic views of the countryside sprawling before you, from the cool of the plunge pool or the soothing heat of the hot tub. Loungers and reclining chairs are set up the face the view and there’s shaded dining and a lounge area on the lower terrace.

Inside, you can see the work of an architect on display in every handmade step, wall of windows and traditional-style fireplace. It’s a vision of soft greys and white, with picture-frame windows at every turn to display the view as proudly as any of the donkey-themed modern artworks on the walls. Sculptures are displayed with museum-level curation, in glass boxes, and the coffee table is littered with thick art books. The kitchen, beneath a wooden ceiling, is an ode to rusticana with a huge island in the centre, yet feels modern in dove grey and light wood. Then there are the bedrooms, both boasting panoramic views from walls of windows the instant you wake up.

Taking up part of the ground floor of an ancient olive mill, this home is full of typically Tuscan rustic charm. Along with the wooden ceiling beams and terracotta floor tiles, guests will find a collection of antique furniture, ornate bed frames and an opulent chandelier. The ceramic tiles in the kitchen are rather fetching, too

Take a peek out the windows and you'll see the garden, which, although shared with other residents in the building, has a good variety of quiet seating areas. A rather unique part is the ancient washhouse, which is still supplied with fresh spring water so guests can cool off during summer afternoons.

Although the address is surrounded by countryside, it only takes ten minutes in the car to reach the seaside at La Terrazza della Repubblica or Lido di Camaiore. The cobblestone streets and Renaissance walls of Lucca are only a forty-five-minute drive away, too.

Forty minutes away by car from the medieval walled city of Lucca, this villa is another fine example from the medieval era – a former castle. If you’re looking for the royal treatment, you might have found it.

Set among a spectacular array of fruit trees and bushes in its gardens, the scents of lavender, lemon, orange, and rose are thick in the air. With multiple levelled terraces, you can survey your lush kingdom from the top of the castle. You might find yourself particularly drawn to the glimmering, private pool on the lower level. Give your subjects (or family) a wave from the top, before heading down into the historic interiors. 

Exposed masonry, flagstone floors, and vintage furnishings complete the look in the lounge. But the kitchen is surprisingly modern, with glossy chrome fixtures and marble floors keeping that luxe edge. The apartment itself is an ideal city bolthole. Intricately carved teak furniture gives the open living room a Balinese calm feel and floor-to-ceiling corner windows keep things feeling light.
