A short distance from Florence and Siena, you can venture out into the region's world-famous rolling hills for wine tasting from here, making it an ideal base for lovers of good food and drink. Having a car is a must here, especially if you want to visit Florence (36 kilometres) and Tavarnelle Val di Pesa (7 kilometres). Guests will occupy the right wing of the house, which is spread over four levels. While each bedroom is comfortable, the double room on the highest floor provides the best views of the countryside. Plus, there’s a fitness room, swimming pool and hot tub, and areas to dine or relax in the sunshine. 


Love in the Sun

This traditional Italian farmhouse has been carefully restored to create a beautiful villa. Set on the edge of the small village of Tavarnelle in the hills surrounding Florence, there’s definitely a touch of old school romance to this home. Wisteria winds its way around the pergolas, and the honeyed stonework of the farmhouse is draped in vines from its terracotta roof tiles down to the sun-drenched terraces surrounding it. Inside, the spaces are on a grand scale, with vaulted ceilings in the kitchen and lounge area that makes you feel like you’re residing in a medieval castle. There’s a long table for feasting, a huge stone archway and fireplace, and heavy velvet drapes strung across the outside doors. Four-poster beds, cavernous bathrooms and a Turkish bath only add to the effect. This is a character-packed home, ideal for a big group of family and friends to come and spend time together. With its large grounds, swimming pool, sun terraces and ample indoor areas, there’s more than enough space for everyone to socialise together or spread out and do their own thing as desired.

If you’re looking for somewhere with style and substance, this home in the Tuscan hills is just what the doctor ordered. Not only is it teeming with traditional features – think wooden ceilings and exposed stone walls – but every aspect of the layout has been designed with your comfort in mind, from the open-plan living area to the self-contained first-floor suite – the perfect place to enjoy a moment of privacy. 

Settle in for a day of relaxation by the pool or set off for one of the neighbouring towns and spend the morning practising your Italian with the locals. Found a five-minute drive from Gambassi Terme, the villa feels like it's in the deepest countryside, with nothing but lush countryside and forest surrounding you, transporting you back to the graceful embrace of nature. Wooden beams, an open-hearth fireplace, and stone arches give the plot a sense of history, which is added to by antique furniture and rugs. 

Days start by pushing open the French doors in bedrooms and looking out over the Tuscan hills, before breakfast on the wrought-iron table on the patio. The pool is perfect for cooling off from the heat, with sun loungers for relaxing. As night starts to fall, the long wooden table under the straw pergola is the only place to be – watching the pink and orange sky turn dark. Assign barbecue duty and sip glasses of wine while you decide which part of this gorgeous spot you want to explore next.

Dating back to the early 1800s, this former farmhouse is perfect for escaping the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Not only is it surrounded by beautiful countryside (check) and within easy reach of a whole host of wineries (double check), but it has plenty of outdoor space, with no shortage of loungers for kicking back and soaking up the glorious Tuscan sunshine. 

We could easily spend all day unwinding here – the traditional design features alone are enough to make us want to stay put – but we wouldn’t blame you if you wanted to get out and see what the rest of the region has to offer. Go for a stroll through the neighbouring vineyards or jump in the car and head into Gambassi Terme – an ancient town named after the area’s natural hot springs – to get a taste of local life. Or, if you’re starting to miss the sights and sounds of the city, take a day trip to Florence and indulge in a spot of sightseeing. Just don’t forget to snap a selfie with Michelangelo’s David.
