You'll be just 900 metres from the beach, and the views are downright blissful – they stretch across the sea to the island of Formiche di Burano. Everyone will appreciate the swimming pool, and the terrace makes the perfect spot for a nightcap as the sun goes down. Perched on a cliffside on the edge of Monte Argentario, the sunset views from this home are sublime. From the dining table on the terrace, you can gaze out over the sea and there are plenty of seating nooks in the shade. The real highlight is the private staircase leading down the cliffside to a rocky swim platform set up with loungers and parasols. Just remember, it’s quite a climb back up to the villa. The living room is huge, so big groups will feel at home here, and a wall of windows shows off the sea view inside. Tiles in the bathrooms might be a little garish for some, but who cares when the outside space comes with that view.

It’s all about the good life at this Italian villa. We’re not just talking la dolce vita, but the full, sustainable package. It’s on an enchanting eco lavender farm, so the fields around you are fragrant as perfume and the villa has its own orto (vegetable garden) which you’re welcome to harvest. Perhaps cook fresh-veg-topped pizzas in the antique pizza oven outdoors, and enjoy at one of two terraces, overlooking the rolling countryside. For days at home, there’s a sparkling swimming pool to cool off in, a petanque court and ping pong too. 

We’re impressed by this villa’s eco-credentials, supplied by renewable energy and with natural aromatherapy oils on offer from the lavender farm. Inside, it’s a calming medley of Japanese zen and Scandi-chic touches. The living room is set around a big fireplace and raw-wood tables and wicker lampshades are a nod to your natural surroundings. The kitchen could be the envy of any professional chef, with a huge, range-style cooker perfect for the fresh produce on your doorstep.

Getting out and exploring, you’ve got Italian countryside all around you and the village of Marsiliana is less than ten minutes drive away for supermarkets and pizzerias. Twenty minutes away you are spoiled for choice – from the charming medieval villages of Capalbio and Pitigliano to the glamorous beaches, bars and restaurants of the Silver Coast.

But for all that, you'll have more than enough to keep you busy with all this home has to offer. The well-selected modern furniture and fixtures blend beautifully with the terracotta floors, brick-vaulted ceilings, stone arches and fireplaces. The classical rustic interior transports you to the past, especially with the countryside views from nearly every room. 

And there’s a lot to see – sitting proudly on a five-hectare estate, the home looks out onto both cultivated land and woodland, a lush garden of flowers and cypress trees. Outside, the rolling landscape is best enjoyed by the shimmering stone pool or the romantic, shaded pergola. In the heat of the afternoon, read in the cool of the study before returning to the patio. This charming apartment is nestled in the picture-perfect village of Suvereto. Cute and cosy, it's ideal for couples looking for a romantic getaway, or a solo traveller who wants a tranquil base when exploring the wonders of Tuscany.

Step inside, and you'll find a gorgeous space that reflects its rustic location perfectly. There are plenty of traditional touches, from the exposed brick and wooden ceiling beams, to the distressed wood dining table. Pick up some local ingredients, and practice your Italian-style cooking in the kitchen – it's a homely space where you can whip up the perfect risotto. When you've finished eating and sipping some Pinot Grigio, you can get comfortable in the peaceful bedroom, for a restful night's sleep. 

Although petite, Suvereto is packed with cultural delights. Wander through the labyrinth of passageways dating back to the medieval era, and stop off in the family-run restaurants for delicious pasta and pizza. Don't miss the Aldobrandesca Fortress and the beautiful Romanesque church, both just a few minutes away from your front door. A twenty-minute drive will bring you to the Etruscan Coast, with its hidden coves and pinewood forests – so, whether you want to lie on a beach or take an invigorating hike through the woods, you'll be very happy here.

There are two living rooms here and there’s an exercise room which is on the lower floor. Outside, there's a dining area, a pergola with an alfresco lounge and an infinity pool with panoramic views of the Tuscan hills. Location-wise, this home is a short drive from the thermal springs of Terme di Saturnia. The beaches of the Tyrrhenian coast, such as Giannella Beach, are also reachable in around half an hour by car.

Set out over three levels, with a different perspective over the stunning landscapes around every corner, this vast hilltop villa is guaranteed to impress. The interior is pure traditional Tuscany, with brick archways, exposed beams and terracotta flooring to ground you as you wander from room to room. 

Each of the individually decorated bedrooms brings its own charm, while the main bedroom – with direct patio access and stunning marble en-suite is set to dazzle even the most seasoned of travellers. The open-plan seating area and dining room form an integral heart of the home and would be the focus almost anywhere else. However, life in Tuscany is best lived outdoors, and you're blessed with a number of balconies, rooftop terraces, poolside patios and landscaped gardens (plus seating areas in each one) that ensure there's always a corner to claim as your own. We imagine you'll spend most of your days sprawled out by the pool, only interrupting your tanning time to grill some lunch and take part in sporadic table tennis tournaments.

The surrounding area is well worth exploring. In under ten minutes, you can reach the timeless medieval town of Cetona. Here, the scent of cypress trees fills the air as you explore the winding streets of one of Italy's most beautiful towns. Slightly further afield, you're also within an hour of Val d'Orcia, one of Tuscany's six world heritage sites and the subject of countless Renaissance paintings.

Maremma Amara

A trip to rustic Tuscany is always a good idea – and staying in this beautiful home seals the deal. This gorgeous pale stone house is tucked just outside of the small town of Palazzone in the Tuscan countryside. Far-reaching views of the lush countryside of Tuscany and Umbria make for a magnificent backdrop, complementing the centuries-old trees, olive groves, and meadows that surround the home. This is an idyll, where the scent of lavender carries on the breeze. 

The garden is a haven of tranquillity and natural beauty. Float in the swimming pool while you watch bees bob around the flowers, the hum of insects the only sound to disturb the peace. Spend hours at the alfresco dining table, turning languid lunches into lively dinners as the sun sinks in the sky and the wine is poured more freely. 

When the Tuscan sun is at its strongest, shelter in the traditional living room, beneath wooden beams. The villa is cool and calm, with enough room for everyone to enjoy their own space. 

You might like to drive out to explore the region, popping into Palazzone to eat pizza in the much-loved restaurant. The town is famous for its wine production, and is a far offshoot of the Chianti region – you can happily spend an afternoon or two visiting the local vineyards and sampling the wine. Your host’s family produces their own wine and olive oil – add some freshly baked bread and local cheese, and you have the makings of a perfect lunch.

On Elba Island, just outside Lacona off the west coast of Italy, this first-floor flat is a hilltop hideaway offering sweeping views of the Tyrrhenian Sea’s turquoise waters. After a day of sun and exploration, come back home for cocktails on the balcony followed by an elegant meal at the wood dining table.
