This rustic farmhouse surrounded by picturesque hills makes for a restful Tuscan retreat. The interiors are a little dated in parts, but perfectly comfortable for a rural stay – the dining room with panoramic windows is a highlight. Outside, the terrace offers swing seats, loungers and a dining area, so you can maximise every moment with those country views. The unpaved track to this house is a little tricky to navigate, so it’s not the best for low-suspension cars. Nearby you’ll find Pescia’s authentic restaurants and shops, while Lucca lies less than 25km away should you feel like a day in the city.

Decadent in every sense of the word, this villa in the Tuscan countryside is a dream come true, as far as we're concerned. Owned by a bespoke interior designer, it should come as no surprise that every room is a treasure trove, filled with plush furniture, eclectic knick-knacks, antique furniture and that unique designer touch that makes it sing. Historic character is around every corner – we're particularly fond of the wooden beams and brick ceilings – but all the mod-cons are accounted for, including a stunning chef's kitchen perfect for meal prepping and small, luxurious bathrooms complete with rainfall showers.

But there's no denying that the garden is the best part of all. Romantic and magical, we'd happily spend all our time out here, admiring the medieval architecture of the 10th-century church next door. While away lazy afternoons swimming in the private pool, sunbathing on the lounge chairs and reading in the gazebo. Come dinnertime, share an Italian feast and a bottle of Tuscan wine under the leafy pergola as the night falls, surrounded by twinkling fairy lights. When you're ready to venture out, Tuscany's main sights are all reachable by car – including Florence, Lucca and Pistoia – but we're just as happy to stay local and discover Montecarlo's traditional eateries, wineries and medieval fortress.

Whereas most homes give you a single terrace if you're lucky, this Tuscan property spoils you with outdoor spaces. As well as a lounge given some shade by a large parasol, there's also a separate deck with an alfresco dining table and a stone barbecue, plus another area that holds a swimming pool.

Although we're betting you'll be spending most of your time in the open air, the interior is also pleasing to the eye as well. Through the arched doorways, guests will be greeted by a rustic interior, complete with cooling tiles on the floor, patterned walls in the kitchen and lots of botanical-themed artwork dotted about the place.

The local village of Vellano can be reached in around ten minutes' stroll and has a couple of restaurants for when you get peckish. Further afield, there are Tuscan towns that can be reached in under an hour's drive, such as Montecatini Terme, Lucca and Pistoia. If you're up for a slightly longer journey, Florence is only an hour and twenty minutes' drive from the home.

From here, you'll also be well-positioned for visiting the historic town of Lucca – just a twenty-minute drive away as well as the region's local beaches, which are reachable from the house in thirty-five minutes.

If you’re a wine connoisseur, then this elegant Tuscan home, set on a winery, could be for you. There are beautiful views over the private vineyards and countryside from the infinity swimming pool. Inside, we love the conservatory – the perfect place to dine under the stars. The main bedroom suite is another highlight of this home, as you can see. You may not want to leave this luxurious farmhouse, but if you do there are many charming towns nearby to explore – we’d recommend hiring a car to get the most out of your stay.

Watch the glorious sunset over the Tuscan countryside and beautiful Lucca from the terrace of this romantic apartment. Or enjoy a candlelit supper of acquacotta, surrounded by lush greenery and twinkling lights – we adore the outside space here. Inside, there are character features aplenty, thanks to its farmhouse heritage. Think wooden beams, terracotta floor tiles and a large elegant fireplace. Another highlight is the bedroom, with its large painting and views over the Tuscan countryside.

Lucca and its many attractions, such as the Guinigi Tower and the Puccini Museum, are a few miles away. Or the village of Tofori is nearby, while if you like gardens, the Giardino di Villa Garzoni is a must-see.

This magnificent yellow house sits in the rolling countryside between Lucca and Tuscany, offering incredible views of this lush, green part of Italy. The home is elegant and unique, with ceiling frescoes in the bedrooms and even a consecrated chapel in the grounds – this would be a magical setting for a wedding. 

Special events aside, this is a wonderful holiday home whether you’re travelling with friends or family. There’s plenty of room, including a spacious traditional kitchen – why not hire a private chef and enjoy an alfresco feast on the terrace? The outdoor space is marvellous, set over several terraced levels. The result is incredible views of the Tuscan countryside from every angle. The swimming pool is sheltered from view by a row of trees on one side, and open to sweeping views on the other – it’s glorious at any time of day, but we’re particularly fond of a sunset swim. 

The villa is only a thirty-minute drive from Lucca, and within easy reach of Florence too – the train to Florence takes an hour and eleven minutes. Spend a morning in Lucca admiring the architecture from a picturesque square, then stroll around the medieval centre with a gelato. For some top-notch relaxation, we recommend driving fourteen minutes to Montecatini Terme. This gem of a town boasts nine thermal spas housed in historic buildings – it feels like stepping back in time in the best way. 

There’s so much to see and do in this beautiful part of Italy, and this spectacular home is the ideal base from which to explore. When you’ve taken in all the sights you can manage, recline on the terrace with a glass of Chianti. Bliss.

This magnificent sixteenth-century villa, set amidst the green countryside, under the Tuscan sun, is a dream spot for a large family get together, or an escape for a group of friends. 

Opulence is the name of the game here, and we were immediately seduced by this home’s charm. Firstly, its setting is truly idyllic, with stunning vistas of rolling green hills, punctuated by dark and majestic cypress trees. Evenings are particularly enchanting, and you’ll no doubt find yourself organising elegant suppers and aperitivos, with the glow of the setting sun as your backdrop. The covered, outdoor dining area invites those communal feasts, with the laid-back, dolce-far-niente vibe. In the heat of the afternoon sun, you can cool yourself in the lovely swimming pool, and work on your tan on one of the sun loungers dotted around. 

The inside of the villa is a stunning mélange of classic Italian style with modern comfort. We love the incredible attention to detail with which the interior has been decorated, and you’ll find yourself wandering around these rooms, admiring the art and the unique pieces scattered about. There is more than enough space to lounge about, with comfy sofas and chairs, and you can also enjoy sumptuous indoor feasts in the large dining room.

In the beautiful Tuscan countryside outside Lucca (a twenty-minute drive away), this villa epitomises la dolce vita. Okay, the pool is communal, so you’ll be sharing this idyll with other guests. But the views looking up to the medieval village of San Gennaro are beautiful and more than make up for this. The apartment itself is on the upper floor, so benefits from views over the Tuscan countryside. The bathrooms are a little dated perhaps, but the rest of the home has a cosy, traditional feel. When you fancy exploring, nearby Lucca has a whole host of treasures to discover or take a twenty-minute hike up the hill to San Gennaro.

Inside, you'll find 19th-century antiques and ceiling frescoes – and while this may not appeal to the modernists among you, the place has that quintessential Tuscan charm that we can’t get enough of. Taking advantage of the glorious weather couldn’t be easier thanks to the alfresco dining terrace and seating area, and when you need to cool off, there’s a private pool. Location-wise, Montecatini Terme is within easy driving distance, but if you fancy exploring further afield, Pisa is our day-trip destination of choice.

This Italian home boasts panoramic views of the Pistoia hills from the poolside. Comprising a main house and barn rented as one, you’ll have four living rooms to spill out into here. With a pool table, table football, and archery, there’s plenty to keep the kids happy, and outdoor meals will be easy thanks to two alfresco dining tables, a barbecue, and an outdoor oven. The layout here won’t suit everyone – the home is spread over several floors and one of the staircases is open – and the traditional decor won’t be to everyone’s tastes, but it’s a great option for those seeking a house with personality. Location-wise, you’re in the village of Massa e Cozzile, with Lucca, Pisa, and Versilia within driving distance for day trips.

When it comes to enjoying the region's famously agreeable climate, you're spoilt for choice. There are almost enough alfresco dining tables to sit somewhere different for every meal of your stay and there's both a pizza oven and barbecue to whip up lavish feasts. To work up an appetite, head over to one of the two swimming pools – one in the middle of the verdant grounds and the other hidden away among stone walls and vaulted ceilings on the home's lower floors. The hot tub on the terrace adds another welcome option.

Inside, there's a traditional flavour to the home, with wooden ceiling beams and exposed patches of stonework lending a rustic charm. At the same time, chandeliers in many of the rooms and gilded mirrors bring a sprinkling of glamour to proceedings, too. We defy anybody not to be wowed by the regal bedrooms, as well.

In the local area, carefree days can be spent walking through the Tuscan countryside and stopping off at pretty villages. There are larger cities well within reach, too – Lucca is only 11km to the east, for example, and Pisa is 28km away.

Blessed with an isolated spot in the Tuscan hills, there's something rather tranquil about this home and you're sure to find it easy to relax, whether you're splashing about in the swimming pool, cooking up dinner in the summer kitchen or simply admiring the beautiful views.

There's a lot to like about the home itself, too. Dating back to the 17th century and spending much of its life as a farmhouse, the living quarters are understandably a little traditional – note the stone archways, wooden ceiling beams and terracotta tiling underfoot. There are some more contemporary aspects though, including the recently renovated kitchen and Jacuzzi bathtub.

When it comes to getting to know Tuscany a little better, the town of Montecatini Terme is only 10km and has nine thermal spas to visit. A little further afield, the Renaissance-era architecture of Lucca is 30km away, while Viareggio's beach is 55km from the home – close enough for a day trip or two, we'd say.

If you’re looking for local immersion in a quintessentially Tuscan home, you've found it. Once the lowly hayloft of a country retreat for nobles, it’s been elevated to something wonderful. It’s rustic – think exposed brick, cooling stone floors and original wood beams – but with the kind of luxe touches that wouldn’t look out of place in a Renaissance townhouse. We love the juxtaposition of homely vibes with ornate flourishes. Who knew chandeliers could look so good in a barn? Set on a private estate, with lush gardens all around, the owners are your only neighbours. Signora Rosa will welcome you with open arms (and maybe even a slice of homemade torta), and the whole family is on hand to help, while also respecting your privacy. There are two complimentary bicycles available for guests, making the five-minute walk to the local town even quicker. Here you can pick up groceries to cook up an alfresco feast; you’ll want to make use of the pretty, shaded outdoor dining area with views over the immaculate grounds. There’s even a wood-fired pizza oven, so you’d better start practising your dough spinning. We’d happily hole up in this place for a week or two, but with a car, it’s the perfect base for exploring Tuscany.

Tranquil doesn’t even begin to describe this wonderful apartment. It’s tucked away in the hills above Bagni di Lucca, in a tiny village that’s quiet even in the height of summer. You’ll share the grounds and outdoor pool with four villas, but there’s plenty of space. Stunning views can be admired from almost every angle here, with far-reaching vistas of the surrounding hills and forests. The apartment is rustic in style, with exposed stone walls and terracotta floor tiles. It’s the perfect retreat for a romantic getaway.

Surrounded by the rolling green hills of the Valdinievole, this imposing villa has been fully restored to offer the perfect mix of period character, classical elegance and modern convenience. Standing in newly landscaped grounds, it's the perfect picture of a Tuscan villa – with white walls, terracotta tiles and tall cypress trees. And we love the tower room that tops it all off with its arched windows.

Inside, the space is beautifully decorated with bold colours and frescoes. Exposed beamed ceilings and wood floors to many of the rooms add charm, while a practical, modern kitchen comes with all the equipment you could need to cook at home and the bathrooms are all stylish and individual. The living room has a particularly cosy feel, with a fireplace for winter escapes and striking red walls. A similar room on the top floor serves as a second lounge and has a sofa bed for two guests – ideal for children.

Spend your days by the private pool, which boasts incredible views, or drive less than ten minutes into the town and its famous spas. And for a day out, it's easy to drive to any of the area's main attractions – Florence, Pistoia, Lucca and Pisa.

Just outside the famed artist town of Montecatini Terme, this sprawling villa in the Tuscan countryside is well-placed for exploring not only nearby Florence, but lovely Lucca as well. But while we love the position of this home, we think some guests might end up finding it difficult to leave the premises – with a beautiful mature garden and large swimming pool, this home’s many charms are capped off by a floodlit private tennis court, ping pong table, foosball, and a children’s play area. And that’s before we get to the horses. Keen equestrians – or just the horse curious – will love the fact that this home is neighboured by horse paddocks, with riding lessons and excursions available on request. Inside, the home is decorated in the traditional Tuscan manner, with classic tiling, exposed ceiling beams, and classic furnishings all in evidence. There’s a separate apartment available too, which we think would work wonders for families or friends travelling together. Not that you’ll be spending much time indoors though – with covered terraces, plenty of sun loungers round the pool, and shady spots set up under the trees, this is a home that revels in indoor-outdoor living.

A Little Horse Play

With hosts who actually produce their own virgin olive oil, this stately villa simply radiates authenticity. The home is comprised of three individual stone cottages perched on the Tuscan hillside, located in the pretty village of Ciciana. You’ll be surrounded by the vast, untouched countryside – hiking trails nearby will acquaint you with local farm animals and horses. At the centre of the home is a pristine saltwater infinity pool, benefitting from panoramic views of the surrounding green plains and the medieval town of Lucca below. This home encourages outdoor living, with charming dining areas dotted around the garden – our favourite being the idyllic little lavender-draped corner, boasting stunning views down the hill. Dine al fresco long into the balmy summer evenings with a much larger eating space on the shaded terrace, equipped with reclining wooden chairs, an outdoor kitchen, and a barbecue. Tear apart the focaccia and devour a chilled glass of vino, socialising and playing games while the meat sizzles away. When you’re not indulging in the local delicacies, explore the cobblestone streets of Lucca at your feet, just a short drive down.

The location is fairly remote and well suited to those who are keen to explore the countryside and vineyards, but if you are looking for a day trip, Lucca isn’t too far away.

We love this charmingly rustic apartment high in the Tuscan hills. Boasting sweeping views of the valley below and under a thirty-minute drive from Lucca, this hillside home is also within easy reach of the medieval town of Pescia, where you’ll find twisting cobbled streets, ancient churches and palaces, as well as shops, restaurants, and gelaterias. The apartment’s open-plan living and dining area welcomes you with traditional timbered ceilings, a stone fireplace and a well-equipped kitchen. This room would be perfect for hanging out with friends and family – if you can stay away from the outdoor areas, that is. With a mature garden blooming with roses and lavender, panoramic views, and a shared pool, we bet you’ll find yourselves spending most of your time out here. You'll have access to a communal swimming pool and a shared terrace, as well as a private balcony ideal for sundowners. Location-wise, you'll be based in the tiny hamlet of Brandeglio – so small there aren't any amenities – though Bagni di Lucca is about 10 kilometres away, and historic Lucca is an hour by car. If you ask us, the remote location is part of the charm. After all, you can't get views like this anywhere else.

Surrounded by olive groves and vineyards, this villa offers rest and relaxation for a family or group of friends in the Tuscan countryside. You’ll spend most of your time outside here, thanks to the private swimming pool, dining terrace and four-poster sunbed. But when you do head inside, we recommend making a beeline for the Jacuzzi. Location-wise, restaurants are a short drive away if you don’t fancy cooking. The village of Montecarlo is around a five-minute drive away, and Lucca is reached in around fifteen minutes by car.

From the moment you arrive and enter the gated driveway, you'll realise this is somewhere special. Completely fenced and bordered with hedges, fragrant flowers and antique terracotta pots, the 5,000sqm garden here feels more like a park. Kids will enjoy the outdoor ping pong table, while the adults enjoy sipping sundowners and sharing nibbles in the alfresco dining space, surrounded by the scents of the surrounding vineyards. And let's not forget the Roman-style pool, lined in beautiful blue mosaic tiles with hydromassage jets that invite you to lean back and relax. Inside, this home is just as impressive, with beautiful artwork and elegant antique furniture everywhere you look. We particularly love the green marble spiral staircase, which adds an air of opulence to the space. We're sure you'll be more than content here, but if you want to venture out, the ancient Montecarlo Fortress is close by.

When staying in the spa town of Montecatini Terme, it’s only right to have a spa of your own. This gorgeous villa, nestled between Florence and Lucca, has relaxation down to a tee. Want for nothing with expansive gardens, a private gym, a huge glistening pool, and a spa complete with a huge jacuzzi, sauna, and Turkish bath. 

It might have every luxury you could ask for, with a modern interior that practically sparkles, but the home is traditional and charming. Creamy walls, white shuttered windows, and a terracotta tiled roof, characteristic of a Tuscan abode, set the scene for a blissful stay. 

While the home itself is lovely, we can’t get over the panoramic views of the Tuscan countryside. Atmospheric rolling hills and sprawling fields are everywhere you turn. It’s the perfect setting to unwind and relax by the pool. Better yet, take in the view from your jacuzzi. The spa might be for the grown-ups, but the kids will love the opportunities for games in the L-shaped pool.
