The highlight inside has to be the farmhouse-style kitchen with its electric oven that looks like the bread ovens of old and marble-topped counters against exposed stone walls. The barrel-vaulted dining room harks back to days gone by and throughout you’ll find wooden ceilings and terracotta floors. The living room is a surprisingly sleek and modern space, but the bedrooms – with wrought-iron frames against crisp white walls – are back to Tuscan rusticana. 

You’re out in the rolling hills of southern Tuscany here, but it’s a short hop in the car to Pomarance where you’ll find supermarkets for supplies, and a healthy handful of pizzerias, local bars and coffee shops.

The villa may have the stone facade and arched windows of a traditional Tuscan farmhouse, but the wall of glass in the living and dining room is a testament to the 21st century. There’s more than enough room for the group to spread out and dine together at two banquet-sized tables inside. Unwind beneath a brick vaulted ceiling in the evening. Chefs will feel right at home in the kitchen – all chrome and steel like the professional kitchens of a Michelin-starred restaurant, but with a wood-topped pasta-making table straight out of a 19th-century farmhouse.

This refurbished farmhouse is essentially two homes in one, perfect for two families travelling together. Both segments of the house have three bedrooms, each with direct access to the lush garden. In the living room, floor-to-ceiling windows lead out to the courtyard and lawns, where there’s a private pool and a pond – ideal for game fishing (provided that the fish is thrown back into the water). The interiors pay homage to the home’s initially intended purpose, as a clubhouse for horse riders to relax in, with paintings of horses adorning the walls, and furnishings that have an old-world charm. Despite the antique bed frames and Moroccan rugs, the home itself feels modern, particularly the suspended fireplace in the heart of the living room, and the sleek kitchen flanked by iron columns and picture-frame windows. Your neighbours are of the equine variety, and with stables next door, guests can book horseback riding lessons, and take a trail ride out on the iconic Tuscan landscape.

It’s a ten-minute stroll into the centre where you’ll find restaurants, cafés and archaeological museums beyond the ancient town walls. Further afield, the city of Siena is a half-hour drive away, ideal for a day trip.

The apartment itself is housed in a striking 16th-century building just outside the bridge that leads to il Castello. Wood beams on display hark back to the building’s roots, but the decor is decidedly modern. This charming apartment is located in perfect tranquillity inside a converted ancient palace, where the environment has been impeccably refurbished whilst respecting the original structure. We love how much greenery surrounds this home, and how it can make you appreciate the simple things in life as you take a long walk through the flora, breathing in the fresh air and listening to the bird's chirp. The wooden beams definitely give this home the character it deserves, as do the shutters that can be opened to let in light as you gaze out over the trees of an ancient noble villa.
 
When you want to be a part of the city's hustle and bustle, take the sixteen-minute drive to Lucca and bike along the city walls, losing yourself in the history of what would've been, before indulging in some retail therapy in the Old Town. This is a restful home on the outskirts of the village of Brenna, which is just five minutes away on foot. If you need to cool down, you might stroll five minutes to Stazione Balneare Merse where you can swim from the river beach. Set within easy driving distance of Siena, San Gimignano and Florence for day trips, and with the bustling restaurants of Castellina close by, it’s an excellent base to explore Tuscany. There are plenty of reasons to linger at home, too – starting with those monumental views from the wraparound loggia for alfresco dining. Kids will love you for the private pool, gently sloping lawns for a runabout and table tennis. Meanwhile, adults can factor in some downtime in the private sauna.

With direct access to Padulella Beach, this villa guarantees a memorable stay on the island of Elba. Outdoor living is encouraged here, thanks to the summer kitchen complete with a wood oven, infinity pool and a covered terrace overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea. There’s a rustic approach to the interiors, which we find charming, and we love the sunken Jacuzzi in the main bedroom. Hiring a car is recommended if you fancy exploring the island – let your first stop be Portoferraio, a six-minute drive away.

Set on an estate dotted with trees, shrubs, and other native foliage, this home ecompasses the entire first floor of an ancient villa in Orentano. Despite sharing things like the pool, tennis court, and soccer field with another home, there is enough room on the property for it to still feel private. That’s probably helped along by the fact that you have your own private garden and barbecue – not to mention the sheer size of the home itself. Move easily between rooms and use the easy go-between as an excuse to nip into the kitchen for another cup of coffee and a dozen more biscotti to take back to where you’re reading on the plush sofa. Take the spiral staircase up to the loft where you’ll find the rustic bedrooms and bathrooms for when you’re ready to turn in at night. When you think loft, you might conjure up images of a tight squeeze, but the addition of the skylights in almost every room here allows the light to make the space feel more open. 

With the host and his family living on the estate, you’ll sometimes find yourself around the table enjoying their homemade pasta alfresco with soft music playing in the background. There’s also a brick pizza oven here, so don’t be surprised if you eat more margarita than you’d care to – we know, that is not even remotely possible. 

When you’re not enjoying the home, you can make a trip to Pisa, Voltera, or Florence – each with their unique charm – or borrow the bicycles and simply explore the surroundings on two wheels instead of four. After a day of activity under the Tuscan sun, take a late-night swim in the heated pool, and when you’re ready to return inside, why not linger a little while longer to gaze up at the stars.
