For the culture vultures, we'd suggest spending a day (at the very least) wandering the backstreets and alleyways of Florence. In our opinion, getting lost on a self-guided tour is the best way to get to know the artistic, architectural and cultural history of Tuscany.

In the Tuscan hills, nineteen kilometres from Florence and on the outskirts of Sieci, this gorgeous villa has panoramic views of the countryside. Dating back to the Middle Ages, the main house used to be a watchtower. It sits in a quiet, sunny spot on top of a hill, where forest pathways lead to a nearby lake. Inside, open fireplaces and exposed wooden beams give a traditional Italian farmhouse feel. Antiques meet rustic furniture and mod cons, giving this home a unique charm, with ample and comfortable accommodation. We particularly love the large master bathroom. But it's the garden that really steals the show – tumbling down the hill, surrounded by olive groves, meadows and woodland. Its centrepiece, of course, is the pool, but there is a wealth of spaces to eat, rest and play in sun or shade. Spend long afternoons by the water and evenings around the pizza oven, and play a round or two of table tennis as the sun goes down. The annexe on this home has been tastefully converted into a stylish three-storey apartment with its own bedroom, living room and kitchen – but the villa can be booked without it for a party of nine. The railway station and shops are around eight kilometres away, and there is a restaurant about two kilometres from the house.

In and of itself, this stone and brick villa is rather dreamy. The timber roof trusses and tiled floor bring an easy rustic charm, and the furnishings are unshowy. Large glass doors can be opened on warm afternoons — plenty of those in Tuscany — to let a cooling breeze circulate through the interior. They also look out to a lovely view of the Pratomagno mountains. However, the home is part of a compound with some excellent communal amenities. Pass through the lemon grove, for instance, and you'll come across a large infinity pool with a covered pavilion at the side for alfresco lunches. Elsewhere, there's a well-stocked library and a theatre space where musical and artistic events often take place. Guests can embark upon a stroll in the surrounding private park, where you'll find olive trees, traditional stone walls and waterfalls on the Resco River. You might find there's very little need to leave the address, but the local town of Pian di Scò takes just over twenty minutes to reach on foot if you fancy a change of scenery.

Set on a resort just 55 kilometres from Florence, this apartment has plenty to enjoy. We love that this home has been decorated in a traditional Italian style – bold evergreen stripes line the sofas in the living room, citrusy oranges and yellows are used liberally in the bedrooms and bathrooms, and everywhere you look you'll spot the traditional tiles and exposed wooden beams that have been in this home for centuries. Laid out over three separate buildings, this Florentine villa is actually three homes in one. The main house plays host to the main communal rooms as well as four bedrooms, while in one annexe you’ll find a private kitchen and living room and three bedrooms.
