There are lots of well-known landmarks within easy walking distance too – Campo Santa Margherita is just two minutes away and the Accademia Bridge is a five-minute walk from the property.

For somewhere between San Marco and the Rialto bridge, A Call for Calm is remarkably quiet. It’s far from the main thoroughfares, the narrow alleyways that nevertheless carry tens of thousands of tourists to and from St. Mark’s Square every day. It’s also, location aside, a lovely place to stay. The hefty beams stand out, but every part of the design works perfectly together, and while it can only hold three people, Mario looks after a couple of other places in the building, so larger groups can look at potential combinations.

On the top floor of a 16th-century palace right on the Grand Canal, this one-of-a-kind apartment enjoys bespoke furnishings from a range of designers, including the owner. While not the best option for families with young children due to the vintage and delicate furniture, it's a great choice for couples or solo travellers. The central location is the icing on the cake – the views over Santa Maria dei Frari are lovely. The train station is a short walk away and you're right next to a water taxi stop. Plus, there are bars and restaurants nearby.

Even more amazingly for Venice, this building has an elevator so those four floors are no trouble at all. 

Take your morning coffee on the balcony, then head out to explore the city. The Vaporetto stop at Santa Maria del Giglio is five minutes from the apartment, so it’s easy to get out on the lagoon. The glorious views from Ponte dell’Accademia can be found just five minutes away, while Piazza San Marco is a ten-minute stroll. Rialto Bridge is nine minutes from the apartment – stroll across it with a gelato for a cheeky touristy moment. 

Calle XXII Marzo, an upmarket avenue of high-end boutiques, is just seven minutes from the apartment. Whether you’re flashing the cash or window shopping, it’s worth a wander.

Inside, it’s surprisingly modern, which is unusual for Venice, but some of the original structural features have been kept on to tie the flat to the history of its setting. It’s a nice touch, and works really well. Given the layout of the bedrooms, it feels like it would work particularly well for families, and the proximity to all the main attractions backs that up.

A Call For Peace

A perfect mix of elegance and warmth, this classic-contemporary apartment offers comfortable living in the heart of Venice’s Dorsoduro district. We loved the dark wood floors, oak ceiling beams, rich red accents and wrought iron details. There’s a spacious living area for regrouping before dinner plans and a cosy mezzanine level for enjoying quiet moments with a good book. If you’re a fan of cooking, the fully-equipped kitchen has everything you need for putting together Italian-inspired dishes but when you fancy hanging up your chef’s apron, head over to Al Profeta, a lovely pizzeria, only a ten-minute walk from your doorstep.

The famous Piazza San Marco is an eight-minute water bus ride away. Get your culture fix at the Basilica and Museo Correr before drifting along the Grand Canal on a gondola. Stop for an aperitivo in one of Venice’s glitzy rooftop bars or go for a more informal setting at Osteria All’Arco, a local favourite next to the Rialto Bridge.

A small balcony lets you take in the stunning scenery with the canal right below you, best enjoyed – we think – with a glass of Italian wine. The minimalist decor certainly lets the views do the talking here, and you’ll need to tackle quite a few steps upon leaving the lift and once inside the home itself. But with dreamy postcard-perfect windows and a location that puts you a five-minute stroll from the Gallerie dell'Accademia, this home ticks a lot of boxes for a memorable Venetian stay.

Exploring the grand rooms, there’s a collection of antiques worthy of the Doge’s Palace – from sparkling silver spoons to gilded books and trinket boxes. Silk sofas in the living room are not just easy on the eye, they’re plush and comfy to boot. And the antique bed frames and writing desks in the bedrooms are like living, working history. What’s more, the three bedrooms overlooking the owner’s private, walled garden for a peaceful night’s sleep.

Situated between the Accademia Bridge (a five-minute walk) and Ca’ Rezzonico Museum of 18th Century Art (a three-minute walk), you’re in the heart of Venice’s gallery neighbourhood. The ancient streets around you are home to secret canalways lined with restaurants and bars too.

We love the master bedroom tucked away in the loft – from where you can enjoy panoramic views of San Marco from the freestanding bathtub. The Fenice Theatre is just opposite the apartment, and with a Vaporetto stop a three-minute walk away, you can travel across the city with ease. 


Parquet & Sage 

This canalside apartment takes up the entire top floor of a 16th-century Gothic palazzo. It’s an elegant space with chandeliers and antique furniture, but it’s also a comfortable home-from-home. The location is undeniably the star of the show, just a short stroll from the Rialto Bridge and the crowds of St Mark’s Square, and boasting views over the Rio di San Luca canal. When you want to explore more of the city, it’s a quick walk to the Rialto and Sant’Angelo vaporetto stops.

It would be reasonable to expect somewhere in San Marco, right by the Grand Canal, to be pretty busy, with streams of tourists winding their way along the streets outside. We can’t stress how little that matches up to the reality of A Call For Quiet. It’s incredibly peaceful, and a wonderful atmosphere to return to after a long day of walking around the city.
