For somewhere between San Marco and the Rialto bridge, A Call for Calm is remarkably quiet. It’s far from the main thoroughfares, the narrow alleyways that nevertheless carry tens of thousands of tourists to and from St. Mark’s Square every day. It’s also, location aside, a lovely place to stay. The hefty beams stand out, but every part of the design works perfectly together, and while it can only hold three people, Mario looks after a couple of other places in the building, so larger groups can look at potential combinations.

This sophisticated home offers more modern interiors than its ancient neighbouring buildings. We love the sophisticated colour scheme in the bright living space, where greys and blues feel reminiscent of the main feature of the city – its canals. This charming loft space in Venice was once a boatyard – it's been converted to a high standard, with all the necessary amenities for a comfortable stay. We love the elegant decor of this home and its canal views, as well as the private water door giving guests access to a library room. The kitchen is small but has all the necessary electrical appliances – though there are a number of bars and restaurants nearby should you prefer to eat out. There are lots of well-known landmarks within easy walking distance too – Campo Santa Margherita is just two minutes away and the Accademia Bridge is a five-minute walk from the property.

It would be reasonable to expect somewhere in San Marco, right by the Grand Canal, to be pretty busy, with streams of tourists winding their way along the streets outside. We can’t stress how little that matches up to the reality of A Call For Quiet. It’s incredibly peaceful, and a wonderful atmosphere to return to after a long day of walking around the city.


A Call For Quiet

This charming apartment boasts a rare feature that sets it – quite literally – above the rest. Climb the stairs from the third bedroom and arrive on the roof terrace, from which you can devour a magnificent view of Venice’s skyline, including St Mark’s Campanile. Because of this terrace, this home isn’t suitable for children under the age of 6, but it’s ideal for families with older children, and for groups of friends. It’s in a peaceful setting in the refined parish of San Samuele, close to all of Venice’s main sights, including the Grand Canal. 

Venice, I Can Feel the Waves

Complete with a four-poster bed, gorgeous little courtyard garden, and striking original stone staircase, this beautiful home feels as though it's been plucked from another era entirely. It offers a great blend of old and new, however, as it is equipped with a wonderfully contemporary kitchen in which we can just imagine whipping up a tasty homecooked meal. The home has been in the same family for generations, and you can really feel the love and care that's gone into maintaining it. The period villa also boasts a great location within the Dorsoduro District close to the Campo Santa Margherita where you will find loads of popular local eateries, bustling bars packed with Venetians, and some cafes perfect for people-watching.

Situated within the calmer San Marco district, this contemporary apartment is curated with accents of mid-century furniture – creating a relaxing base for exploring Venice. While the home can sleep five guests comfortably, the walk-through bedroom may be better suited to families. We love the vistas of the Giudecca Canal, Giudecca Island, and the Redentore Church from this home’s windows. Unusual for Venice, there’s a good-sized shared garden to enjoy too. The location is great too – it’s only a two-minute stroll to the Basilica della Salute and the Guggenheim Collection, while Accademia Bridge, one of only four bridges to span the Grand Canal, is five minutes on foot.

After a day's excursions exploring the historic locale, drinks on the rooftop terrace are part of the appeal, or you might prefer to take a glass of prosecco to one of the luxurious bathtubs.

This chic little apartment is a great base in Venice. It’s away from the hustle and bustle of the touristy areas, standing proudly in a salmon-pink palazzetto in upmarket San Samuele. The neighbourhood – once home to Casanova – is home to antique shops and galleries, including the Palazzo Grassi Museum of Modern Art. It’s just a short stroll from St Mark’s Square, as well as the Accademia Bridge and Campo Santo Stefano. The four-poster bed is a nice touch, though guest number three will be on a sofa bed in the open-plan living and dining space. 

Venice's Secret

This apartment can be found in the chic and central San Marco area of Venice. The city’s main attractions, including the Rialto Bridge, Grand Canal, and St Mark’s Square, are within easy walking distance. We recommend resting your feet by seeing the sights from the water though – you’re in Venice after all. Rialto and Sant’Angelo vaporetto stops are nearby, so you can zip around the canals with ease. The home itself is traditional and fairly grand – you can look forward to Murano chandeliers and terrazzo flooring. With a building this old, you won’t find a lift, so it’s best to pack light. 

The Venetian Oasis

A perfect mix of elegance and warmth, this classic-contemporary apartment offers comfortable living in the heart of Venice’s Dorsoduro district. We loved the dark wood floors, oak ceiling beams, rich red accents and wrought iron details. There’s a spacious living area for regrouping before dinner plans and a cosy mezzanine level for enjoying quiet moments with a good book. If you’re a fan of cooking, the fully-equipped kitchen has everything you need for putting together Italian-inspired dishes but when you fancy hanging up your chef’s apron, head over to Al Profeta, a lovely pizzeria, only a ten-minute walk from your doorstep.

The famous Piazza San Marco is an eight-minute water bus ride away. Get your culture fix at the Basilica and Museo Correr before drifting along the Grand Canal on a gondola. Stop for an aperitivo in one of Venice’s glitzy rooftop bars or go for a more informal setting at Osteria All’Arco, a local favourite next to the Rialto Bridge.

The Last Romantic

This colourful apartment in the heart of Venice is ideal for sharing among couples. Its interior is a tad dated, yet charming, and worth noting is that it’s located on the second floor with steps only. Having said that – we’re sure you’ll be busy sightseeing in a city as unique as this one, with some of its most famous landmarks, such as San Marco Square and the Rialto Bridge, within walking distance. Looking to accommodate a larger group? There are two more apartments in this building which you can try to rent out. 

Venetian Dream

Set in a serene spot near the Convent of the Eremite, this Venetian apartment drops you in a prime position for exploring the city. Peaceful yet close to many restaurants, shops, and attractions such as the Ca' Rezzonico Museum of 18th Century Art, you won’t find yourself lost for things to do here. You’ll need to climb the stairs to the first floor to access this fuss-free home, so it may not be the right fit for those with mobility issues. But peek out of the windows at the canal views and you’ll find the climb worth it.
