If you love books, then we’d recommend a browse around Livraria Lello, said to be one of the most beautiful bookstores in the world – it’s well worth the eleven-minute stroll.

Ribeira is one of Porto’s most charming and typical neighbourhoods, and this apartment blends right in. Steps from the apartment is the riverfront, where Porto’s famous wine cellars line the banks, and walking the narrow streets of the neighbourhood you’ll find delights like Palacio Bolta three minutes away, and Mercado Ferreira Borges five minutes on foot. The first thing you’ll notice, stepping into the apartment, is the view directly over the Douro River from the wall of big windows in the living room. Wooden shutters add a touch of tradition, and the darkwood dressers and artfully faded Moroccan rugs are in keeping with the building’s history. Hardwood floors lead from the living room, to the compact kitchen in an alcove and through to the bright bedroom where the exposed stone and big sash window motif continues.

Guests rave about the location of this Porto apartment, and it’s easy to see why. Set in a quiet corner of Ribeira, the Douro River, Praça da Ribeira Square, and neoclassical Bolsa Palace are all just a short stroll away. It’s worth noting if six guests share, two of you will have to make do with a double sofa bed in the living space. Not ideal for some, but it could work great for family sharing. The small inner courtyard is a nice touch for sundowners, and there’s plenty of space to spill out around the dining table for lazy breakfasts of pastel de natas picked up from the nearby bakeries.

Located only a few minutes from the Clérigos Tower, On The Lookout's rooftop terrace offers a rival view to the Cathedral and downtown architecture. We could spend hours with a book in the armchair, taking in the sea air as the day grows to a peak. But of course, this central location leaves much to be explored. You can wander along the riverfront’s picturesque fishing neighbourhoods, hopping on the 1930s tram that runs to Foz. Or, board on a boat that will take you to the famous terraced Douro vineyards to sample Vinho Verde and Port. Light sleepers may want to pack earplugs. You're right by Ribeira, with the waterfront's restaurants, bars and cafes just a short walk away. There's limited living space and the kitchen is only suitable for preparing light bites, but it's a good pick for solo travellers or couples. This studio apartment is a stylish spot to return to after a day exploring downtown Porto. Modern, monochrome artworks sit against striking bottle-green walls, but the first thing that caught our attention was the wall of stone-framed windows, looking out over the tiled buildings of your typical Porto street. It’s a studio but there’s still a decent amount of room, with a separate sitting area and a workspace. It’s sleek and modern, with everything you might need for a comfortable city break.

Situated in the charming Ribeiro neighbourhood, a three-minute walk from the neoclassical Palácio da Bolsa and within touching distance of old-school restaurants serving traditional Portuguese fare, this modern and bright apartment is a great base for exploring all that Porto has to offer.

We loved the light-filled living space, with its huge floor-to-ceiling windows and double-height ceilings. A dining table takes centre stage, encouraging lively breakfasts in the morning and hearty suppers in the evening. There’s also a cosy mezzanine level that is the perfect spot for reclining with a glass of wine before retreating to sumptuous bedrooms for an early night. 

Slip into the narrow cobbled streets and begin your sightseeing adventure. The 12th-century Porto Cathedral is six minutes from your doorstep and the Igreja dos Clérigos with its 75-metre-tall bell tower is reached in less than ten. When it’s time to call it a day, make a beeline for the Vitória viewpoint to watch dusk fall across the city.

Set on the elegant Rua das Flores, this gorgeous two-bedroom flat offers you the perfect base to explore central Porto. Located up on the fourth floor, you'll enjoy breathtaking vistas over the neighbourhood rooftops towards Porto's Romanesque cathedral.

Inside, the main open-plan living space offers more than enough space for four to unwind, dine and socialise in comfort. A large corner sofa is set right by the French doors. On warm days, you can open them up to the outside world and let the city atmosphere float in on the breeze. Elsewhere, there's a four-seater dining table and a well-equipped kitchenette.

Both bedrooms are decorated in similarly neutral tones, with ample storage so you can unpack your bags and settle right in. The main bedroom elevates its offering with an en-suite shower room and Juliette balcony that lets in plenty of natural light.

Down at street level, the pedestrianised Rua das Flores is lined with traditional restaurants and independent shops that occupy the ground floor of historic buildings adorned with azulejo tiles and ornate wrought-iron balconies. Not only does it place you right in the heart of action, but you're also close to some of Porto's most majestic sights, including Sé do Porto and the Palácio da Bolsa – both no more than a five-minute walk – and the waterside Cais da Ribeira, a ten-minute stroll away.

After a quick stop for lunch in the sunshine, we recommend heading to the striking Livraria Lello bookshop – said to have inspired parts of the Harry Potter movies, it's well worth a visit.

The main bedroom leads out to a private balcony which is great for a breath of fresh air, despite the lack of view.

The open-plan living space is perfectly proportioned, with enough room for entertaining your loved ones or enjoying a quiet moment with a cup of coffee. We had a particular soft spot for the individually designed bedrooms and we loved the kitchen’s handy serving hatch.

When you’re ready to explore your surroundings. Begin with a trip to Porto Cathedral, just a short walk from your building. Or why not head down to the water? Amble alongside the Duoro River with an ice cream in hand before watching the world pass by in a charming cafe. In the early evening, we recommend watching the sunset from the nearby Miradouro da Rua das Aldas viewpoint.

Located in Porto's iconic Rua das Flores – known for its cultural landmarks, shopping and restaurants – you're right in the heart of the city at this stylish apartment. With three bedrooms, a bright dining area and a Juliet balcony, it's perfect for family trips and friendly get-togethers. 

On the ground floor, you'll find an impressive open-plan living space, combining natural materials, modern furnishings and a side of industrial design to create a relaxing home. Housed in a building dating from the 18th century – it's classed as part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. It has been completely renovated inside, creating a modern, comfortable home. Later, get ready in the stylish bathroom for an evening out in Ribeira.

Down the neighbourhood's narrow, cobbled streets, you'll find cosy bars and eateries serving classic Portuguese cuisine. After dinner, take a stroll over to the iconic D. Luís Bridge, a short walk away and take some atmospheric nighttime shots.

Boasting pastoral architectural features in combination with minimalist interiors, we were not only impressed with the sleek look but more importantly, the comfort provided. On top of that, you’ll be staying in a fabulous location, especially if you’ve never been to Porto before. You're right by the city centre and close to the most important tourist attractions. Of course, it wouldn't be Porto if wonderful cafes didn't also line the streets.

Rustic Tawny

Combining original elements with modern upside-down living, this apartment is an ideal base for those couples or families of three looking to experience the enchanting heart of the city. Boasting a long, double-height living area with a wonderfully bright and open layout, you'll find it easy to come back and relax after days of sightseeing in Porto. 

We love the enticing space with oak floors, wood beams, and exposed stone walls which make the design feel reassuringly rustic, and yet the contemporary decor adds plenty of modern comforts. The sociable open-plan layout invites chefs of the group to whip up feasts in the kitchen while chatting with others around the dining table or unwinding on the sofa. 

When you’re ready to venture out for some sightseeing, make a beeline for the Church of Saint Ildefonso or the Livraria Lello bookshop nearby, before sauntering a little further on to the Porto Cathedral and the bustling city centre. Try a slice of Porto life at this immaculately presented studio apartment, standing proud along one of the city’s oldest streets. Housed in a period building once home to 18th Century bourgeoisie society, the picture windows and ornate balcony that wraps the length of this home remain to tell of its deep history. And though it’s a studio space, we think it’s beautifully formed and full of charm. Ideally suited for a romantic break for two or a single traveller, there’s a cosy nook for your morning breakfast and a well-kitted-out kitchen area for rustling up a light meal. Though let’s face it, in the land of smoked cheese, cured meats, Atlantic-caught seafood, and Pastel de Nata, we suspect you’ll be dining out, a lot. And you won’t have far to go to find all the delicacies, or indeed must-see sights, of the city. You’re just five minutes from some of the city’s most happening bars and restaurants and a twenty-minute stroll from the Duoro River. The famous Livraria Lello, where Harry Potter was born is just around the corner. So is the Clérigos Tower viewpoint – the perfect spot to admire this picture-postcard pretty city.

Uptown Rock

Nestled in the heart of Porto, you’ll find many of the city’s top attractions within easy reach of this home. From here, Clérigos Tower, Igreja do Carmo, and Livraria Lello are a short walk away. And, when you’re keen to travel further afield, with Aliados Metro station just 350 metres away, zipping around the city is a breeze. You’ll need to climb the stairs to this apartment, but on arrival, you’ll find a comfortable space to relax and a private balcony overlooking the Porto rooftops. Just note that there's no oven here, so we'd recommend sampling the local eateries nearby. 

Clérigos Delight

Perched above the shop-lined Rua das Flores, this apartment boasts a prime location in the city centre. While it's easy to walk to famous landmarks, the São Bento tiled train station awaits at the end of the street if you're going further afield. Whatever brings you to Porto, your host's special services can help you squeeze the most out of your stay for an extra fee – think ticket booking and airport transfers. As for style, we love how this home's beamed ceilings and preserved arches showcase the building's history.

Historical Grace

With its great location in trendy Rua das Flores, this functional home places the best of the Porto on your doorstep. The river is just a fifteen-minute walk away, while the local area is teeming with historic buildings, eateries, bars, and more. Arrival is easy thanks to the self-check-in, and the kitchenette has everything needed if you want to cook. Being a studio flat, you won't find much space here, but with that location, we think you'll be outside more often than not.

Heartbeat of Porto

They say you should never judge a book by its cover, and this apartment provides compelling evidence as to why that's sound advice. Set within a historic terraced building, you might be expecting an apartment divided into small rooms, with charming period features and wall to wall antiques – we certainly were. 

However, the reality couldn't be more different – large picture windows illuminate a spectacular open-plan kitchen/diner, with a few steps leading up to a platform with a spacious corner sofa and views over the terracotta-tiled roofs, this home is on the cutting edge of contemporary design. 

The standout feature is the enclosed mezzanine bedroom, where you can look down over the living area and across the neighbourhood courtesy of a wall of glass. And if you were worried about the levels of natural light, there are additional skylights set into the ceiling to allow it to come pouring in from every angle.

Once you've familiarised yourself with your new surroundings, it's time to explore the area. You're well catered for when it comes to top attractions within walking distance, with the city's cathedral and the pedestrianised Rua das Flores within a ten-minute walk, while the waterside promenade of Cais da Ribeira and the imposing Clérigos Tower are no more than fifteen minutes on foot.

No Port Left in the Bottle

Located just a two-minute stroll from Rua das Flores and a seven-minute walk from Porto Cathedral, this apartment is perfect for sightseeing. If you want to explore the rest of the city, São Bento train station is five minutes on foot. Just remember to bring you're walking shoes, as this home is on a bit of a hill and the apartment is on the first floor, with no lift (there are two flights of stairs to reach the door). But you are rewarded with views of the city's cathedral once you've arrived – take in the vistas from the private balcony. Inside, we love the vaulted ceilings, which add character to this modern home.

Porto Haven

Sitting in a popular district near the Santa Catarina shopping street, this apartment sets you up for a fuss-free stay in the heart of Porto. You'll be within easy walking distance of the city's top attractions and benefit from a charming balcony upon your return home from busy days spent sightseeing. The open kitchen is also well-equipped for preparing light bites, just note there's no oven here. You'll also find a sofa bed in the living area, ideal for those travelling with younger families. However, keep in mind that you'll need to climb stairs to reach the entrance of this first-floor apartment. 

Porto's Gem

This attractive apartment is in a central Batalha location, just two minutes from Batalha Square and a ten-minute walk from lively Ribiera. There are restaurants and cafes nearby, in addition to bus stops and Sâo Bento train station – if convenience is key for you, this is a great choice of base. The apartment is simple, allowing the floor-to-ceiling windows to draw the eye. Two guests will be sleeping on a sofa bed in the open-plan living and dining space, which isn’t the most private. 

The Porto Story

Set in the heart of Porto, this apartment provides easy access to the historical marvels dotting the city – and when you want to travel further afield, the closest metro is a mere ten-minute walk. So, while this fuss-free home may not be filled with luxurious finishes, it’s all about the location for us. It’s a comfortable space for four people, just bear in mind that the second bedroom is an interior room, so lacks natural light. That said, we think this makes it a perfect spot for a restful, undisturbed sleep.

The apartment is simple and functional, with a balcony for sipping sundowners after a day along the Douro River (speak to your host to arrange a tour). While a great choice for those visiting on business, your host can also provide a cot and high chair for little ones, and there’s a sofa bed that could comfortably accommodate two extra guests.

Delicate and soft, this baby blue apartment has plenty of surprises waiting for you. We're swooning over the features – the coffered ceilings wouldn't be amiss in a royal palace, while the iron on the arched window is intricate and charming. Add in the cushy orange sofa, parquet flooring and decadently tiled bathroom and it's love at first sight. The layout is also unique – technically, it's more of a studio, but a glass wall keeps the bedroom separate from the living space. The kitchen is a little basic, but we don't mind – if anything, it gives you an excuse to sample the many delicious eateries in Porto.  

But the best part, by far, is the excellent location. Palácio da Bolsa is two minutes away, and there are cafes, bars and boutiques aplenty on your doorstep. Pretty much everything is within walking distance – be it markets or museums – so we think a couple or solo traveller will be happy to call this place home. Wander down the famous alleys of Ribeira do Porto (a four-minute walk), grab a cocktail at one of the riverside restaurants or just stroll along the Douro and soak up the magic of Porto.
